saying? I am confused, I thought we were talking about the building attached to this rather than <br />the material in the front. I thought that is what Mr. Tallon asked you about. Mr. Rinker: Then <br />maybe I misunderstood, I thought he was talking about the Dillard's building. Mr. Spalding: He <br />was tallking about the 140-foot also, I think. Mr. Rinker: Yes that is masonry. Mr. Spalding: <br />Another words how you can soften the combination of the two structures, and I think that is what <br />he was inferring. Mr. Rinker: I thought there were two issues, and one was the use of the product <br />on the wall itself. Mr. Spalding: I thought you previously talked about the product. Mr. Rinker: I <br />did. Mr. Spalding: Then he mentioned about how you could soften the inter relationship between <br />the existing structure and Dillard's or the extension of the existing structure. Mr. Rinker: It is the <br />issue of the transition between the edition portion and the Dillard's the abruptness as you <br />characterized it. Mr. Tallon: what I am asking, is there any way of stepping it down or somehow <br />so it does not go on a 190 degree angle 140 foot from the roof of the new extension to the roof of <br />Dillard's. It just seems that it is so dramatic. Mr. Rinker: You were talking about the frame of the <br />building not the exterior, that is what I misunderstood and apologize. Mr. Barker: I think we <br />would be open to suggestions. Mr. Tallon: Maybe some type of parapet type thing on the <br />expansion. Mr. Rinker: I am going to push a button here and ask if Mr. Yager can speak to some <br />of these questions. He is certainly better versed at these issues then I am. Mr. Tallon: I am saying <br />just step it down. Mr. Yager: There are just a couple of things that I would like to go through. <br />We met last Wednesday and we reviewed several of these issues. Actually, everything that has <br />come up tonight came up last Wednesday. I am going to go through a list of the issues that were <br />brought to our attention that we ask them to address. I will tell you a little bit about our process <br />and about studies we did as a board. The issue that came up was generally the positioning of the <br />building. If you look at the access point along Country Club, it is off centered from what is a very <br />formally, very symmetrical building. We ask them to look at adjusting the building possibly so that <br />you entered in on access. They did some sketches, and reviewed those sketches with our board. <br />They are perfectly content that the situation of the position of the building is acceptable. While <br />we are kind of on the fence with that, if they make the adjustment find and if they do not, it <br />actually hurts their mall more so than us as a public. The next issue is already come up that is the <br />material selection of E.F.I.S. verses masonry, verses the cost of masonry verses the cost of <br />E.F.I.S. the look etc. In our review from last Wednesday through tonight and they have <br />mentioned some other malls which I can appreciate the commission's concerns that the mall that <br />we should be discussing tonight is Great Northern mall and not the others. At least iet me give <br />you a little bit of background, I went to Beachwood mall and they have four department stores <br />there. There is a Sacs, which was recently renovated and is E.F.I.S. from the ground to the roof. <br />There is a Dillard's which has a masonry base, I think it is an existing brick base and then it goes <br />up into an E.F.I.S. exterior and has some nice details. Its cornice line has a granite base at the <br />columns at the entrance and is quite nice, and probably the nicest store outside of the next one <br />that I will discuss. Nordstrom is the other for sure department store at Beachwood mall and that <br />is an entirely masonry facility. It is beautifully done and beautifully detailed no E.F.I.S. on it at all. <br />I went to SouthPark mall in Strongsville and they have a Dillard's, J C Penny's, Sears and a <br />Kaufinanns. The Dillard's at Beachwood was done with a brick base and an E.F.I.S. facing and <br />cap. The Dillard's at SouthPark was done out of all masonry and is lacking a considerable amount <br />of detail at the area that we as a public would consider the most appropriate location to put detail. <br />When you are walking from a human scale near -the entrances, in either situation there is plenty of <br />detail, granite bases E.F.I. S., water table, water components that really look nice as a level of <br />7
