2. A 122.5 square foot variance for a ground sign larger than code permits (code permits 50 square
fee:t, applicant shows 172.5 square feet), section (1163.26 (c)).
Note: Proposal consists of removing 2 existing pole signs and replacing an existing ground sign and
combijie all 3 on one ground sign. Size of ground sign in determining variance is calculated using one
side orily. Both sides are used for total sign face area and does conform to maximum sign restrictions.
Which is in violation of Ord. 90-125 section (1163.26 (c)).
Chairman Maloney called all interested parties forward to review the request. Mr. Russell Kalina, of Adams
Signs, came forward on behalf of Ganley and was sworn in. Mr. Kalina passed out photos of the Ganley
dealership. He indicated Ganley Imports has been on Lorain Rd. for a long time and they are undergoing a
remodelin;; project. They re-did the inside and are looking at remodeling the exterior. One of the concerns
of the North Olmsted Building Department is the number of pole signs on that property. They are asking
the board to consider one ground sign to encompass all three of the automakers at that dealership. Mr.
Kalina sai(i the proposed sign would be placed where the Subaru ground sign is currently located. The sign
for Volkswagen and the Hyundai pole sign will be removed, as well as the Subaru ground sign. NIr.
Maloney asked if they will be up to the top of the sign that is on the building or if they will change the
roofline. Mr. Kalina responded that the roofline will change and added that the building sign will be
removed a.s well. Mr. Maloney inquired as to whether they will have adequate clearance for both cars and
trucks going in and out if they have the new sign. Mr. Kelly asked about the height of the sign. He is
concerned that it may look out of place. Mr. Kalina said the Volkswagen sign there now is 24' in the air.
Mr. Kelly asked about the change in the roofline. Mr. Kalina said the Volkswagen sign is being removed
and the er.itire front of the building is getting redone. Mrs. Sergi asked whether there will any sign on the
front of tYie building. Mr. Kalina replied there is a proposed Ganley sign that is a flat wall sign that will
meet the code. Mr. Rymarczyk asked if the sign needs to be as big as they are proposing. Mr. Kalina said
it was difficult to get the manufacturers to agree to this idea. They are actually downsizing the Volkswagen
and Subaru signs, and the Hyundai sign is staying approximately the same. It may look quite large, but
when it is in place it will not look as massive as it does on a drawing. Mr. Rymarczyk asked if he could
check on the size again before variances are granted. Mr. Kalina said he does not see a whole lot of
flexibility t:here. He said the only thing that he would be able to do is to bring the panels that are now 5' 8",
down to approximately 5' on each panel. This would reduce the height of the sign 16". Mr. Konold
commented on how the signs there now look cluttered. Mrs. Sergi inquired about the panels being even
and Mr. Kalina confirmed the panels would all be even.
W. Kremz;ar motioned to grant Ganley Imports, of 25600 Lorain Rd., its reguest for variance (1123.12)
which consists of ground and pole signs and that the following variances be granted; 1). An 8 foot variance
for a ground sign higher than code permits (code permits 12 feet, applicant shows 20 feet), section
(1163.26 (c)). 2). A 122.5 square foot variance for a ground sign larger than code permits (code permits
50 square feet, applicant shows 172.5 square feet), section (1163.26 (c)). Note: Proposal consists of
removing.2 existing pole signs and replacing an existing ground sign and combine all 3 on one ground sign.
Size of ground sign in determining variance is calculated using one side only. Both sides are used for total
sign face a.rea and does conform to maximum sign restrictions. Which is in violation of Ord. 90-125 section
(1163.26 (c)). The motion was seconded by J. Maloney. Roll call on the motion: W. Kremzar, J. Konold,
N. Sergi, J. Maloney, "yes", T. Kelly, "no". Variances Granted.
9. Zer ort Landscaping; 29857 Lorain Rd.;
Request for variance (1123.12). The proposal consists of open-air structure.
The following variances are requested:
1. A 10 foot variance for side yard setback (code requires 10', applicant shows 0'), section (1139.07).
2. A2 foot variance for side yard setback (code requires 10', applicant shows 8'), section (1139.07).
Which is in violation of Ord. 90-125 section (1139.07).
5
