?
• • 1
board to send in a copy of what they're planning. Mrs. VanAuken said she saw somewhere you can
lend to the celebration with some festival or event you already have. She said it comes between March
and October so they could easily do something with homecoming. Mrs. Lord asked if anyone on the
board is on Community Council. She said she is not sure who the leadership is for that council. Mrs.
Davis said she believes it is Shannon Smith. Mr. Barker confirmed she is on the council and added
that Lisa Limpert is on that council as well. Mrs. Lord asked that someone on the board find out who
the contact is and let them know we are aware of this effort and we'd be more than happy to work
with them. Mrs. Davis offered to work on it. Mrs. VanAuken said the oral history project that Don
Copeland is working on would be good to incorporate. Mrs. Lord suggested everyone read through
the ideas listed in the correspondence and think through things they might want to do. She said if
there is something they want to do above and beyond homecoming, and the oral interviews, they
should begin to think about it because things often take longer than originally expected. Chairman
Lord added the board should probably have contact with the Chamber of Commerce, and the different
groups in town and have some dialog with them and let them know we'd like to have a coordinated
effort. She presumes that would be what the Mayor has in mind. She has not talked with him about
it.
? The Local Historian - Mrs. Lord asked the members if they read anything that should be discussed.
Mrs. VanAuken said on page 7 there is a sample of the signs they have. She said the board had talked
about a place they would like a sign and found you have to put up a lot of money ahead of time. Mrs.
O'Rourke said it is $2,000; indicating it is 2/3 of the cost. Mrs. VanAuken added she received another
letter saying that now is the deadline if you want to ask for a sign. She said the last time it was
discussed, they didn't have the money. She said they already have a number of signs and a]ot of local
places do not. Mrs. Lord said if there is someplace in town that they haven't put a sign, this would be
a way to get some funding. She asked if anyone thought of a place or an event that should be
marked. Mrs. VanAuken mentioned there is a quarter being put out for each state and Ohio is coming
up this year. She suagested having some kind of contest at homecoming or somewhere, and giving a
prize of an Ohio quarter. Mrs. O'Rourke said if they want to do that, they will have to get a large
quantity of quarters. Mrs. VanAuken indicated she collects them and has heard that others have gone
to the Federal Reserve Bank to get them, so perhaps large amounts can be picked up there. Mrs.
Davis said if we're going to do it, we should probably move on it in the next month or so. Mrs.
O'Rourke mentioned Wal-Mart giving out the gold dollars. She indicated she was unable to get one as
they were always out of them when she went. She added it was a sharp idea though. Mrs. Lord said
they don't really have funds for that kind of thing but maybe the board should think about it, and if
they want to use them, come up with a way they could do it. She added they haven't had a booth at
homecoming for a nuinber of years but it has always been available as a part of the City booth. Years
ago they had a separate booth but it required they man it from dawn to midnight. Mrs. Lord asked the
group to read the rest of the material before the next meeting if they hadn't done so already. She then
asked when everyone received their packets. The group indicated they received them Saturday. Mrs.
Lord said when she called the Commissions office she spoke with Mrs. Kilbane who indicated she
would try to get the packets out earlier.
• 2002 OAHSM Regional Meetings brochure - Mrs. Lord pointed out they talked about this at the last
meeting. There is a meeting on Apri120u' at BrecksvilIe Community Center. Chairman Lord indicated
they have seldom been able to participate in this kind of day-long thing but if anyone were willing to
participate, it would be a much-approved expense. Mr. Lind indicated he would look into it; he may
be able to go. There was further discussion about the dates and counties offering the program. Mr.
2
