inform Mr. Dubelko of this fact so he is aware of it. She added that each time she has called to
inqizire about the project, it seems to be "on hold." She requested that Mr. Dubelko notify the Board
if hi-I hears of any progress. Mr. Barker brought up that the Mayor's library meeting is on the agenda.
Mr. Barker attended the meeting but indicated he really does not have an update on the meeting.
The:re was a meeting and people were told that everything is on schedule. There will be an open
mef;ting with the architect for comments from Landmarks and any other interested parties. Mr.
Barker said they are really just waiting for an announcement of this meeting. Mr. Barker asked Mr.
Dubelko to mention Landmarks if he hears any news of this meeting. Mr. Barker added that the
Coinmission has beeri reminded that it is green space that is in the historic district and not the Iibrary
itself. He said the Board still feels it shoulcl have_ some input on some of the architectural design of
the building. Mrs. Lord said in one of the renderings of the library, they came to Landmarks and Mrs.
VaiiAuken provided a lot of pictures of things that could have some impression on the building. She
said the Board was involved about 2 years ago but it has not been recently because things are in a
hol(iing pattern. Mr. Lang mentioned that when the library was introduced to the public, prior to the
bon.d issue, he attended a meeting that summer, and at that time the architectural drawings were first
preSented. The style had a Georgetown look. He expressed dissatisfaction with the style because it
was not in keeping with the district. It -didn't fit in with the historical time frame. He thinks it might
be beneficial for the Landmarks Commission to gain the ear of the architect prior to the open forum
meE;ting because they always seem to come in at a time when any objections they have are too late.
Mr:;. Lord indicated that attempt was made on several occasions this winter. She was told by the
Mayor's office that it is not time yet. Mrs. Lord indicated she will make another call and try to reach
the Mayor. 5he thanked Mr. Dubelko for his contribution to the meeting. Mrs. VanAuken inquired
as to whether a representative from the architectural firm could come to the open meeting also.
? Springvale
Mr;;. Lord mentioned the Board had visited Springvale last fall. She added that Mrs. Davis spoke
witJz the previous owners. The Board was given some items that are in the office. They seemed glad
to liave the Board's interest. At the time, the Board considered the idea of officially land-marking
Springvale; both the golf course and the dance hall. Mrs. Lord commented that nothing was officially
don.e. They have not done a landmark in approximately 20 years. She remarked that the only 3
lancimarks in the city are Old Town Hall, the Universalist Church, and the Barton Rd. church. She
indicated that the sign is down at the Barton Rd. church. Mrs. Lord said Springvale.was put back as
nevi business because they have really not had a discussion; they just made the visit. Mrs. Lord
suggested making plans for what they, as a Board, would like to do and then determine the necessary
steps. Mr. Lang inquired as to whether it is the oldest ballroom in Ohio. Mrs. Davis indicated it is
the oldest ballroom with a wooden floor. Mr. Lang asked if they are eligible to request some signs
witll the state bicentennial approaching. He commented it might be a good opportunity to have them
pay for the sign. Mrs. VanAuken pointed out that in order to get one of the signs, they would have to
raise $5,000. Mrs. Lord commented that the city bought, through the Commission, all of the historic
mai•kers in town. The first one cost $500. Mr. Lang suggested that the bicentennial group might still
- be able to help. Mrs. Davis mentioned a couple that may have some funds to contribute. She added
tha1: if the Board had a plan for how to go about doing it, and the reasons for doing it, and what it will
lool.c like, she believes the Commission would have their cooperation. Mrs. Lord added it is their
family legacy and something the Board should honor. N1r. Barker asked if there would be any effect
on the historical significance of the ballroom with the addition being put onto the building and the
improvements the city is making. The question was raised as to what would actually be land-marked;
just the dance floor, or the whole concept, which makes it rather unique. Mrs. Lord mentioned it is
one of the oldest golf courses in the state. She commented that she believes it is a decision only the
Landmarks Commission can make. It's a local designation.. 1VIr. Lang inquired about the significance
2
