?-
state of Ohio. Mrs. Davis said the first or second hole of Springvale was once across the street, at the
entrance to the North Olmsted course. Mrs. Lord remarked that it points out the fact that they need
to €;et the research done and write something down. She mentioned Rose Scheef and said they need
to iise whatever research they have available. She said back when the property was owned by the
family, there was a typed history. Mrs. Lord added she might have a copy of it. She said they need a
plaii. Mr. Lang said the Board's action to designate Springvale as a landmark would be a launching
pad into investigating state and federal status also. Mrs. Lord suggested pursuing support from the
city to ensure that it is a good idea. Mr. Barker asked Mr. Dubelko about the Landmarks ordinance.
He wondered whether the city would have to go before Landmarks to continue with improvements to
the facility if the Board land-marked the building as suggested (Mr. Dubelko could not be heard).
Mr;;. Lord said that as a courtesy, the Commission would help. She added they were involved with
the restoration of Old Town Hall and they have a history of involvement with the ciTy, and are a
conunission of the city. Mr. Lang said it may be a time for a piggyback, looking into CLG status;
Certified Local Government status. He asked if the city could become eligible for funds fi-om the
state for restoration or renovation if they were a certified local government. They could also be
eligible through the Ohio Historical Society going to the National Trust. Mrs. Lord said that once
you are a CLG community then there are doors opened that aren't opened' otherwise. She said the
Board has completed. two steps; the survey throuah funding from the Ohio Historical Society, and
theii they have a form of design review within the ordinance. She will check to see what other
reqilirements exist to become CLG. Mr. Lang asked about a review of the CLG application about
1 1/2-2 years ago. He said Michael Gareau, Jr.'s new ordinance changed the complexion of the city's
rea(iiness to become a CLG. Mrs. Lord said it brought them a lot closer to achieving that status, and
Mr. Lang agreed. He said it might not be a bad time to take another look at that application process.
He believes he completed the form and may have turned it in before he left the Board. He thinks the
city would be in a good position to do more for the community, particularly involving Springvale, if it
wer•e a CLG. Mrs. Davis asked if that would make funds available. Several members indicated funds
woizld then be available. Mrs. VanAuken wondered if Mrs. Davis could be sure that Rose Scheef
knaws that the Board is very excited about this, so she doesn't feel it is being left on a back burner. If
she did not want to get involved, they would be in a horrible state. She added it would be good if she
feels she is working with Landmarks on a joint project, so her family has a real legacy in the
conununity. Mrs. Lord suggested inviting her to a meeting. She inquired as to the steps to take to
mal:e the CLG available. They need to have some conversation with the city regarding that
possibility. They need to do a history and need to talk with Rose Scheef. Mrs. Lord referred again
to the sign on Old Town Hall. She asked if they would want to use the same kind of sign that was
des:igned many years ago if they do go ahead and landmark a building: It is not the same as a historic
building sign; it is a bigger sign. Mr. Barker said he knows Mr. Corell did a lot of research in trying
to fincl the molds. He added he has some contacts with C&C Machining. If they could come up a
pict.ure, he could perhaps find someone to give them some prices so if they have a building to be
don.e, they can buy a piece of bronze or brass and have it milled. He added it might be cheaper than
trying to find someone to produce it from molded metal. Mr. Barker offered to inquire with a few
people, and Mr. Corell indicated he would check on it as well. Mrs. Lord asked Mr. Lang to recreate
some of his CLG work to find out what needs to be done. Mr. Barker asked Mr. Lang if the previous
effcirts went any further from him and to the administration. Mr. Lang indicated he believes he sent
the paperwork over to the law department to Michael Gareau, Sr. for an examination and some
feeciback as to whether or not his interpretation of what is in the ordinance is correct in terms of CLG
application. He believes he got an answer back but he doesn't know if a lot of the questions were
ans•wered. He does not believe it went any further than that. Mr. Lang added that whatever he
tunted over to the Commission upon his departure would have included that information. Mrs. Lord
4
