O'NZalley, it might be prudent to become more proactive dealing with the school district on their long-
ran;;e plans. Mrs. Lord brought up the funding that is available for replacement of school buildings
rigl-tt now. She said there is a two-thirds formula; if it costs more than 2/3, the state is saying rebuild,
but there is a waiver to that for historic reasons. Mr. Corell said that formula became a fulcrum and
as a.ny contractor knows there is an issue of high-balling and low-balling to get past that, pending cost
over runs; so the provision is useless. Mrs. Lord indicated the Ohio Historical Society lends some
expertise to this. Mr. Lang mentioned that he had conversations previously with the school facilities
conunittee and with the superintendent regarding preservation of the original section of the current
middle school, the front section. He is still in communication with the superintendent and clerk of the
board. He passes on information to them and reminds them Landmarks still exists. Mr. Lang said
everything but the front of the middle school is expendable. Mr. Barker said that as a Commission
they should not go in head strong with an. attitude of "you do everything or-you get nothing." He said
compromise is a very good word to use and as a Commission, they should keep compromise in the
forf;front of all negotiations. Mrs. Lord asked Mr. Lang to keep the board informed about the
schools and the facilities process. -
? Preservation e C,'leveland Restoration Society - dues notice
Mr;;. Lord indicated they have been a member of this group before and their membership expires next
wee;k. Mrs. ORourke asked if this is in the budget. Mr. Barker said they did put in for $2985 but
during the budget proceedings, which he attended, he noticed the budget was cut to $625. At that
time, he mentioned to the Mayor the computer the Board hoped to work on with Mr. Copeland. The
Mayor asked Mr. Barker if he had spoken with the new computer contact in the city. Mr. Barker said
tha1: maybe between the Mayor and Mr. Copeland, the computer won't be replaced with a brand new
one, but perhaps it could be replaced with a more updated one. He also noticed in the final
appropriation for Landmarks, the figure is now $500. The Board will have to watch expenditures
even more carefully. Mrs. Lord said they may be able to get a$50 membership as a non-profit
community organization. Mr. Lang suggested going with the Cleveland Restoration Society, as they
are the conduit between the Board and the Ohio Historical Society and the National Trust. Mrs.
O'R.ourke made a motion to renew the affiliation with the Ohio Association of Historical Societies
and Museums and the Cleveland Restoration Society. The motion was seconded by Mr. Lind and
unanimously approved.
o Bic-entennial C.'ommission postcard
V. COMT%QTTEE REPORTS:
? Porter Stone House Tour - Mr. Corell indicated the tour is set for May 11"' at 10:00 a.m. The Board
is to meet at Old Town Hall. Mrs. Lord informed Mr. Dubelko the house is set back on Porter and
wa:; built in 1860 out of quarry stone. She added it has been the subject of much talk over the years.
It vias destined for demolition, there were fires, and there were some wild gatherings. She said it has
been purchased and is being restored.
o Regional Meeting - Mr. Lind reported he did not attend the meeting
? Mrs. Lord brought up a walking tour of Butternut, which is an issue they had previously discussed.
She said they have someone who has offered to help them with it, her neighbor, Dan Neiberding. She
saicl there might be a way to connect Springvale -to it. She asked if anyone was interested in working
on a subcommittee with Mr. Neiberding. Mrs. O'Rourke and Mrs. Davis offered to help. Mrs. Lord
saicl she will try to put together a meeting. Mrs. Lord mentioned the letter concerning the self-guided
tou:r of North Olmsted. She re-typed the letter and distributed copies. It was never anything other
thaii something to give out to people to do on their own. She said the Commission did a lot to
promote it at the time it came out. She proposed some changes before re-using it. She asked the
6
