s The Local Historian
Mr;;. Lord mentioned that this publication is provided by the OAHSM. Mr. Lang mentioned in
keeping with the minutes from last month, there was discussion about a CLG. He said if anyone
is looking for reasons to pursue it, you can read on page 7 an article on that topic. He indicated
that he has found that many times either Landmarks Commission itself, or Council, or the
Administration, seems to say that they do not have the money to pursue a certain project.
Bec:oming a Certified Local Government at least puts you in a position to pursue available funds
that are made available through the National Trust for Historic Preservation through the Ohio
Historical Society who administers the grant awarding process. Grants are available as listed on
page 7, along with program requirements, however, we do not quite meet them. We are very
close but he did not pursue this since the last meeting, a meeting with Mr. O'Malley.
s Preservation Books catalog from IVational Trust
? Walking Tour of Butternut Ridge
Mrs Lord asked if the Board would like to do their first annual walking tour some time this
summer. She said perhaps it could be done during homecoming, or sometime in the fall. If they
can narrow down the time frame, they can discuss what else needs to be done. They could call
this an activity for the Bicentennial Committee and it wouldn't hurt to do it three or four times
beca.use they don't have to have a large group. She asked for input on when they should do the
first one. Mrs. O'Rourke pointed out it has to be during nice weather which would mean spring, or
go ii1 the fall. Mr. Dailey suggested having a sign up sheet during homecoming and set it up for
September or October before the weather starts to turn bad. He said it can be turned into a
fund.raiser for the group, have a group head back for apple cider and donuts. Mrs. VanAuken
pointed out that some people would not want to walk the whole distance so it should be broken up
into sections, which means they would have to have places where people can park. She mentioned
the :new Butternut School. Mrs. Lord said she would like to figure out two or three different
walks, which would allow people to continue or stop at various times. There could be parking at
the ]vliddle School that would help with that. Mr. Lang mentioned that Springvale was discussed
as part of the tour. Mrs. Lord said the goal is to have a document that could allow for self-
guidance, which is sorely in need of being updated. Mrs. Davis brought up the new library. Mrs.
Lor(i indicated she heard the other night the ground breaking is slated for next February. Mrs.
O'Rourke mentioned she would like to work on the walking tour committee. Mrs. Lord said her
neighbor, Dan Nieberding, is still willing to meet with them to help out. She will try to arrange a
meeting. There was discussion about the walking tour pamphlet being revised before distributing
it.
VI. OLI) BUSINESS:
? S'pringvale
Mrs Davis mentioned there seem to be some problems at Springvale as far as the renovations.
Mr. Dailey said Council has not had the meeting on it yet. He indicated that Lisa Thomas, the
Safety Director, went out to Springvale to tour the facility. She will be apprising Council. Mrs.
Lorci said that from the beginning, they have been investigating any of the history they can in
orde:r to determine if they can recognize the ballroom, and/or the golf course, both of which hold a
3
