.
' the board members if they would like the sandstone used as a foundation or protective barrier around the
sign. The board members agreed that is a good idea. Mrs. Creadon indicated they will make sure the
placement is near or in line with one of the poles. Mr. Lang indicated that would work much better. Mr.
Hunsicker mentioned the gazebo is still being looked at for future use. They already have the design.
Mr. Barker asked if it will be raised. Mr. Hunsicker said it will not be raised. Mr. Barker suggested
taking a vote on the fixtures and making a motion to use the foundation stone around the sign. He said
W. Miller can take those recommendations to the Board of Zoning and Development. Mrs. Davis
indicated it should include the finiaUno finial issue. Mrs. VanAuken said with the building and the
surroundings, they are trying to echo a simpler time. The fancy lights do not go with that idea. Mrs.
Lord suggested they make a motion to send it on to the Board of Zoning and Development. Mrs.
O'Rourke suggested having the safety director or someone check on the safety of the sign location. Mr.
Dubowski asked if the Planning Commission will have another review of the plans. Mrs. Creadon said
they have given final approval. Mayor Musial said that safety issues regarding sign locations are always
taken to the police department. It has not been done yet. Mrs. Creadon said the completed drawings are
due in 2 days and when all of that is done, the sign location can be looked at.
P. Barker made a motion to set the SA fixtures for V8915 for the library lighting. The architects and
landscaping people will use foundation stone around the historical sign with no lighting. The sign will be
moved closer to the street light on Butternut Ridge so it will be visible but not present any traffic
problems. The inotion was seconded by M. Davis and unanimously approved.
Mayor Musial said they will use the SA design with the SP optics. Mr. Hunsicker confirmed that. There
was further discussion about the fixtures chosen.
J. Lang made a motion to recommend the light pole P2525 at 14 feet high, and the RF64SD for the
planted area. They do not recommend the finial for any of the light fixtures. The motion was seconded
by P. Barker and unanimously approved.
There was further discussion about the number of lights and the locations. Mr. Miller thanked the
Landinarks Coinmission for its input in this very important project for the city. Mr. Hunsicker said the
board's decisions can be reacted to quickly. The only one that they will have to look at closely is the
ground mount sign. He will fax information to the police and safety department tomorrow to get input.
There was further discussion about the trees in the area and saving as many as possible. There was then
discussion about the "fronts" of the building. The ceremonial front is on Lorain. It was difficult to
change from the round farade but there were some benefits too. Mr. Lang asked what the texture of the
walking path will be. He asked about the track texture. Mr. Hunsicker said the track will be a crushed
stone. It will be a nature path. He would compare it to the tow path along the canal that has a tight,
compact, crushed stone. Mr. Lang asked if anyone had ever seen pulverized glass used. It is gorgeous
and very soft. He asked if the sign on Butternut for the library has to be 7 ft. tall. He said for what is
almost an auxiliary driveway, he would think a 4 ft. sign would be better. Mr. Hunsicker said they can
look at it, especially since it isn't the address sign. He added that with the speed limit on Butternut, it
should not be a problem. Mrs. O'Rourke mentioned that the area is zoned residential so a ground sign of
that size would need a variance. Mr. Hunsicker indicated that is an issue and he will check it out. The
following individuals were present at various times for the meeting: Mayor Musial, Council members
Michael Gareau, Paul Miller, Carolyn Kasler, Dean McKay, and Service Director Mary Creadon.
• Certificate of Appropriateness for Dudley & Mary Beckrest, 25346 Butternut Ridge Road. The proposal
consists of replacing windows with alternations.
Mrs. Lord indicated the Beckrest's are not present. Mrs. O'Rourke said as she reads the plans there are
three windows they intend to replace. Mr. Lang said they are double windows. Mrs. O'Rourke said the
bill is estimated at $6,000. She questioned the price. Mrs. Lord said the board would not ordinarily
address windows but this is construction, a change, so the board will have to review it. Mr. Lang said
4
