said he asked that of Mr. Halleen and he said he will reply after he talks to legal counsel as to gaining
entrance into the structure for examination.
Mrs. VanAuken was excused at this point. There was a short break and the meeting reconvened at 8:58 p.m.
5. Halleen KIA, 27706 Lorain Road Applicant is seeking permit for demolition of building (Rebecca's)
See above.
V. CONIlVIUNICATIONS:
• Memo to the Mavor re a?rding status of filling commission vacancies - Mr. Barker said this question was
brought up at the last council meeting and the Mayor indicated he has meetings set up. The Mayor should
be meeting with Mr. Schumann this week. Mr. O'Malley said when he was researching the historic
district, he had occasion to meet Bob Kerry. He invited Mr. Kerry to re-enlist and he declined citing other
work duties, but he would not give up on that idea.
• Memo to Citv E?neer Garv Durbin to request demolition contracts for Dunfee (Dunphv) home - Mr.
Lang indicated he did receive the contract but he did not receive the specs. He took rt upon himself to
inquire as to the foundation stones of the home. He called the demolition contractors. They informed him
that they did in fact remove some stones and put thein in the custody of the construction engineer, Mr.
George Daily. Mr. Lang said he went to the construction site and talked to the representatives of H.R.
Gray. He went to the home and was instructed by the person he spoke with that the city knows where the
stones are. He talked to the city engineer, and to an employee of the engineering department who indicated
he/she knows where the stones are; the city picked up and transported those stones. He found out from
another employee exactly where those stones are. This was last week. He then made a request that the city
engineer call him, which happened this afternoon. The engineer informed him the stones are secured on
city property behind a locked gate and are in very good hands. He said the architect for the library took a
sketch of the stones that were supposed to be used for the fountain in the atrium. The stones that Mr. Lang
saw do not, he believes, match that sketch. Mr. Lang said that Mr. Durbin informed him today that they
went out to the site where the stones are housed and examined them. There is no where near enough stone
or sizable enough stone to use for the intended purpose. He does not know what happened. It appears as
though part of what was requested was in fact fulfilled but he does not know where the rest of the
basement went. Part of the mystery has been resolved since they know where the stones are. Mr. Corell
asked if they are the right stones. Mr. Lang said no. They are stones and probably from a foundation but
they are not what he saw and he does not believe they are what the architect thought he was going to get.
He said for the moment they will let it go at that. Mr. O'Malley said he also requested those documents
and he focused on the pages of specifications. There is a paragraph of the demolition contract where the
requirement is there to preserve the foundation stones and display them to the construction manager who
would then determine which of the stones is salvageable. He thinks it was anticipated in the demolition
process some of the stone would be fractured and not all would be salvageable. The construction manager
was to indicate to the demolition contractor what to do with the stones that are salvageable. He said
whenever there is a specification like that, the review of the construction performance requires and
involves some documentation of that process.
• The Local Historian
• Forum News
• National Trust for Historic Preservation regarding Ohio Main Street Program (and Downtown Ohio flyer
regarding workshop dates)
• Chronicle Telegram article
• Cleveland Restoration Society Annual Report
• Perspectives newsletter
• Echoes
• Discussion of the duplication of periodicals per Chairman J. Lan? - Mr. Lang said if no one reads the
materials sent out in packets on a regular basis, he would suggest that the material not be duplicated. He
said if the board members enjoy reading this material, they will continue to have copies made. Mr. Barker
7
