th
Claire Hayes started to discuss the July 17 meeting minutes. She went over old news from the
th
June meeting. There was a motion to approve the July 17 minutes, and it was seconded. The
th
motion passed unanimously to approve the July 17 2000 meeting minutes.
REPORT BY MR TODD MORGAN, RECREATION COMMISSIONER

Mr. Morgan then when over the contents of the packet and afterwards the new programs. There
is a new free to learn to skate lesson, which takes place on Monday November 27. The idea is to
draw people in who normally wouldn’t try, and give them a free lesson. Then there is an
introductory three-week program instead of the customary six-week program. It should be noted
that we have tried this in our tennis program and we’re going great guns with brand new students
back there. They had thirteen and twenty responses to there free lesson program. The November
newsletter contains information regarding the basketball programs, the free learn to skate lesson,
and we also had a movie skate; where we showed the “Mighty Ducks” on the south wall while
the kids skated. At the same time we still had the music going. On Wednesday November 22,
2000 there is a Turkey skate, as usual we hope to have a big crowd. On Friday there is a slushie
skate, anyone who shows up to skate will receive a free slushie. Foil fencing, basketball, and
music man flyers were all in the packets. Also was a new program “Magic Workshop.” It’s a
one-hour class for $12.50 where kids can have a professional magician come in and teaches them
how to do magic tricks. We had over twenty participants and are currently have second session in
the works. It was very well received, and was of interest to non-athletes. Adult pick-up hockey
is going great guns on Saturday evening from 11:15pm-12:45am, we have over twenty skaters.
Jackie Ryan is in charge of making sure enough of goalies attend, so the program continues to be
a success. It brings in between $180.00-$200.00 each week for 30 weeks; both women and men
play. The kindergarten/first-grade basketball clinic was so very well received that we created a
second session. We looking into a six week option program were a new sport was introduced
every week, almost like a gym class. Mr. Morgan then discussed the possible advantages of
targeting the younger generation, and getting them involved in organized sports and recreation. If
the floor hockey in the options program goes well, we might possibly offer a six-week program.
We’re currently experimented with what works and what doesn’t. Once again the kindergarten
basketball program and the “Magic Workshop” was very well received. Also in the packets are
information so that you may familiarize yourself with the new and upcoming products. Mr.
Morgan sat down with a man from Cleveland State, who did the Westlake survey. Our survey is
going to cost roughly $10,000.00. Mr. Morgan will have to work closely with Tom Jenkins and
the mayor to fund this next year out of the budget. Mr. Morgan went over the key points in
having a successful survey: keep the survey short, use quality graphics, use 12pt. print size, paper
color, format, use a cover letter, avoid yes and no questions, should be easy to read and
understand, order your questions properly, and avoid biases questions. Mr. Morgan then went
over an article dealing with skate parks. Mr. Morgan then listed and briefly went over what else
was in the commission packets.

On November 8, 2000 we had our Cheerleading and Football banquets. This year we had 66
cheerleaders and 85 football players. The banquets were held at the Fountain Blue Party Center,
and was attended by Mayor Musial. Trophies were awarded to the football players and the
cheerleaders. Special Recreation had begun, it is held at Butternut Elementary School on
Thursday evenings. The men’s basketball league and ten teams with two spots still open. Open
