Doug feels that it is not. However, once pool is filled, the water pressure holds the walls. It is
getting progressively worse. We were told that we may have 3 years before we have to repair the
pool. [Claire inquired if it was a safety issue.] Doug said that is not a real safety concern at this
time. He feels confident that we can have it up and running smoothly for the summer. [Paul
Miller inquired if there is water in the pool over the winter.] Yes, about ½ full or 2-2 1/2 feet of
water in the shallow ends. [Dave Gardner inquired if we are considering capital to repair the
pool.] Tom Jenkins answered by saying that what we really need to look at is eventually replacing
the entire pool with the addition of playland / water toys. [Paul Miller inquired on the wading
pool and the status of the health department with regards to the separate filtration systems.]
Doug stated that the problem is that the wadding pool’s filtration is connected to the main
outdoor pool. Thus, the chlorine readings for the main pool read fine, whereas the wadding pool
needs to be monitored very closely due to “accidents” with the small children which can deplete
any chlorine in that area. The chlorine levels are monitored very closely and charted every hour.
The Health Dept. Inspector is very cooperative and monitors the situation with care and
understanding. Also, currently Whitmer Pool is working on a quote for the addition of a hot
tub/spa and sauna. These are due back within the week. The hot tub/spa will require NSF
certification and it’s own filtration system. We are most likely looking at approximately $25,000 -
$40,000 for a 10-14 person hot tub/spa. We are considering places to put these. Perhaps the
fitness area, once we have one implemented. Tom Jenkins mentioned that the concern with the
NOHS Swim Team feeling that they suffered due to OFHS getting premium time was squelched
as it was actually due to the coaches conflict of time availability. Another plus is that Doug has
taken over as head coach. [Axel Hoyer inquired as to whether OFHS has their swim meets here
also and if they have their own facility.] Yes, they hold their meets here as well. They do not
have their own facility. We charge $52.00/hour, plus ½ gate intake. [Paul Miller inquired if we
offer classes on the use of snorkels, fins, etc. for adults and/or children.] No, we do not.
However, they can call and arrange something of this sort with me (Doug). We also have “Gone
to Sea Scuba” available, which teaches the basics of scuba. This completes Doug’s report.

REPORT BY JASON FROLO, PROGRAM SUPERVISOR

Jason handles programs which are held outside of the rec center, at the schools and at N.O. Park.
A new program we have begun, which has been very successful, is a program called
“Kindersport”. Kindersport is targeted for children ages 3 to 6. Through the program they
participate in various sports and activities such as soccer, T-ball, basketball. Each week is a
different sport/activity. The program lasts only 45 minutes to one hour, as that is about the time
span a child can handle attentively. The program is limited to 20 children. It is held at Birch
School. Each session has been completely filled thus far. Medals, pins and certificates are given
out at the end of each program to make the children feel special. Our men’s basketball league is
going well at the middle school every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from early
December to late March. We have obtained a new scoreboard and timer. No problems have been
encountered this season as in the past. [Dave Gardner inquired is the teams are sponsored.] A
couple teams are sponsored by Slam Jams, BW3 or the company the coach works for. However,
not all are sponsored. Another new and successful program we ran is “Poised and Polished”.
This was an etiquette class for 6 to 13 year old boys and girls. It teaches them how to act in
social situations and teaches manners. The class was limited to 12, and we had 13 sign up. A
Page 2
