working on plan for the facility to be placed in the current office space and the circular room
in the former cable offices. [Mr. Gardner asked if it has been considered to contract a private
facility to lease space in the Rec Center, such as Curves or Fitworks.] No it hasn’t been, but it
may be a possibility. The only concern would be that facilities such as these tend to come and
go, so to speak. [Mr. Hoyer raised the question if we do this to make a profit, or break even.
Is it worth the risk?] Mrs. Tipton spoke up to say that she has people on a weekly basis
looking for a workout facility to go along with her programs. Exercise programs suffer due
to lack of equipment and workout facility, and the option of purchasing packages. Mr. Miller
pointed out that we have the real estate available to us, which will negate the cost of
purchasing space. [Mr. Hoyer stated that his intention is to avoid taking away from other
programs if the fitness facility doesn’t pay for itself.] Mr. Jenkins stated that there are always
new candidates for fitness centers. If we decide to make the investment, we will propose
projections and goals, as well as discuss a “bail out” plan. Mr. Miller stated in addition, there
may be a “halo” or “ripple” effect from such a facility. More people will be drawn to the Rec
Center, a mother has something to do while her child is in a learn to swim or skate program.

Revenue should conceivably increase in all areas, especially concession.
?

Canopy roof and gym roof are scheduled to be done this fall
?

Specs being worked up for tennis roof
?

June 4-8 the floor in the rink warming area is to be done

Revenue Report:
Month to Date: Up $1000 Tennis and Ice Arena are the big increases
Ice rink will see an increase this month as well since we have received the late payments for the

hockey club.
Year to Date: Up $7,763 We are currently still reviewing concession items being sold and taking
a look at tighter inventory control.
Tom Jenkins suggested concession staff should be made aware of the numbers (rink to concession
link) and see if they have any ideas. Mr. Morgan stated that recently it was discovered birthday
parties have been mis-rung. Whereas, there should be revenue split between rink or pool and
concession. This apparently was not rung as such in the recent past. This issue has been
addressed with the ticket booth and will be corrected. Please also note that Betsy Drenski is now
overseeing concession. She will be taking a look at possible menu changes and promotional
items.

At this time the park design and proposed layout was reviewed. Chagrin Valley Engineering
provided the blueprint. The major points of the discussion are highlighted below:
?

$250,000 approved and appropriated by Council for replacement of basketball courts, tennis
courts and addition of shuffleboard courts.
?

Cut off a good portion of the current parking lot for 5 tennis courts, replacing the 2 existing
courts that are in disrepair.
?

2 shuffleboard courts, up to 4 being considered
?

North end of park will have new auxiliary parking facilities
?

Extend walkway to accommodate walking or rollerblading (This is per Paul Deichmann’s
plan). It has been discussed to put in an asphalt walkway all the way around the park.
?

New horseshoe pits
Page 3
