He feeds them donuts and orange
drink, and provides them with a free skate session. We then held our MLK Dogs n Suds
Skate from 12:00 – 2:30pm, which was attended by 381 people. We give away a hot dog and
an orange drink with the price of admission. We had a great turn out. The event lighting was
in effect for both events, and was well received.
?

Over the holidays, we also held other various holiday skates and Christmas clinics, along with
tennis tournaments. So the Rec Center was a very busy place over the holidays.

Programs and other issues:
?

Met with Dr. Norma Conner and Greg Birney to discuss the school issues, and what would
st
happen if the levy fails. Also, this ordinance would allow the Rec Center to enter into the same type of
agreement with other hotel chains (it would not be exclusive to Candlewood Suites).
Mr. Dubelko, Law Director, has been briefed on the proposal and will be offering his
professional opinion.
?

Harrington Electric cost to replace the original electrical equipment from 1975 is $43,000.
This is a permanent solution to the temporary fix we currently have in place from the power
outage and subsequent damage of November 11, 2001. The Service Director at the time was
going to present this to City Council as an “emergency” calling for professional services, thus
avoiding the bid process. Encompass Electric was also called upon to provide a quote. They
quoted a price of $48,000 to do the same work. A follow up letter was sent (as provided to
the Commission members) from Harrington Electric stating the urgency and necessity to
provide a permanent solution, and to consider the work already done strictly temporary.
Michael inquired if anyone had addressed the issue of funding. Todd stated that within the
fiscal budget, specifically our capital improvement fund, we had planned to encumber $51,000
for a new Lorain road sign, which we now plan to utilize instead for the electrical matter at
hand. Michael asked if this was an administrative decision already made. Todd stated that
Paul Deichmann, City Engineer, was to introduce this to City Council. Michael stated that he
would take care of approving the funds appropriated for the road sign to be utilized for the
electrical solution.
Page 2
