?League play is down in the daytime, due to many women are now unavailable in the daytime.
Thus, evening times have been freed up to accommodate league play. As a result, fewer
permanent court time contracts are available in the evenings; however, many new instructional
programs have been created.

?A new Munchkin Program has begun. These are ½ hour classes for ages 4-6, with a
maximum of 5 per class. This program has become very popular.

?Match play for Juniors has been started. This is a traveling team. This program has been full,
and continues to have a waiting list each week.

?A few years ago, a Free Lesson Program was commenced. One free lesson was offered,
which was a prelude to a six-week follow-up class. This has continued to be very popular.

?Capacity court-wise is 85% full all the time.

?Reason for the extreme interest in the addition of a 5th court is that the premise of all matches
is based on 5 courts being played at once. Currently with 4 courts, each year (for the past 10
years or so) we are required to obtain special permission to play in the Summer Team
Program.

?Facility Long-range Goals:

?To replace heating and air-conditioning units (27 years old)

?New lighting system or updated

?Need for larger viewing area – most concern voiced by patrons

?Need for a large storage area, even a separate building/shed – currently items and
equipment is stored down in the tennis area behind the curtains

?Tennis patrons have noticed the improvements and do appreciate the efforts being made.

Discussion:
Mr. Limpert inquired if it would be possible to obtain a financial model/plan for a brand new 5-
court facility, using the current facility as an indoor gymnasium. Could the Tennis Dept. support
such a facility in 5 years? Pat stated that based on the past 5 years, Tennis has averaged
approximately $120k/year, $30k/qtr. Lisa inquired as to why Tennis is down for year-to-date.
Todd stated this was due to the “Patron Appreciation Program” whereas the fees were reduced.
Now that the ordinance was passed, we have increased the fees. Lisa inquired what this
appreciation program was. Todd explained that two years ago, tennis fees were increased to
offset improvements. When the improvements didn’t materialize, patrons were disturbed that
they had been paying a higher fee with nothing to show for it. Therefor, Todd decided to offer
them a discount on their rates for a period of time. Lisa then inquired if one of the proposed new
th
courts at the park could be used for a 5 court over the year for league play. Pat stated that it
may be possible, however, it would not be ideal and it would need to be early in the morning
before the sun becomes intense. Plus, it wouldn’t help during inclement weather or over the
winter months.

REPORT BY COMMISSIONER

?Special Events:
th

?May 4 – Spring/Summer Registration

?2001 = $16,000 2002 = $21,000

?well-organized; only hitch was the credit card hook-up was not installed on the tennis

courts when the new phone system was set up

?pizza was supplied for all the workers
th

?May 11 – Diamond Skills Competition held at N.O. Park
Page 2
