Recreation Commission Meeting
October 4, 2004

This concluded the report of the Safety Director.

OLD BUSINESS

None.

NEW BUSINESS

Playground Equipment

Mr. DiSalvo handed out to the Commission a proposal for play equipment recommended for
children ages five to twelve and two to five. There is available $25,000 to spend on playground
equipment, and the Rec Center received two quotes: one from Game Time in the amount of
$24,618.53 and one from Recreation Creations in the amount of $24,987.54, with installation.
Simply put, both are quality playground equipment sets with interchangeable modules. The only
thing the Rec Department would be responsible for is removing the present equipment. Mr.
DiSalvo showed a picture of what the actual playground equipment looks like, as well as showing
it to scale at the park. As far as standards go, they are both certified and meet all safety
requirements. They are members of every Rec safety association and every Rec department
association in the U.S. and Canada. It will come down to preference. Betsy Drenski knows more
about playground equipment. Both companies are very good. Whoever is chosen must be chosen
for next year for expansion because the modules are not interchangeable between companies. As
long as that is understood, the Rec Department will have a single source provider for the
equipment. What the Rec Department has for the two to five year olds is pretty weak; Mr.
DiSalvo is hoping to upgrade for them as well as the five to twelve year olds.

The designs were limited to no moving parts because that could mean vandalism. All components
are stationary. The Rec Center is getting away from the tube slides because the kids climb on the
outside of the tubes. Even though there are 18 to 19 year olds playing on it , the equipment is
meant for five to twelve year olds but will withstand an adult playing on it. Basically, both have
monkey bars; one has rock while one has more of a vertical climb. The slides are there. One has
an internal climber unique to that company that is in the middle of the unit. Both offer identical
things. The warranties are the same in the packet that was handed out.

Both companies' warranties are the same. What Game Time has in its favor is that it has been
around longer than Recreation Creations and actually came in lower. Rae Ann has bought
components from Game Time for the Skate Park.

The current condition of our equipment is very poor. There is plywood on it and the suspension
bridge is bolted down so it can’t be moved. Last year, the slide tube was sawed off. The only
thing the current equipment is good for is scrap. It doesn’t meet safety standards right now and is
not ADA compliant.
Page 8
