Recreation Commission Meeting
September 13, 2004

staff meeting, all the lines in the budget were explained and everyone is aware of what area their
department incurs.

Children’s Playground

Mr. Baxter asked about improvements at the park as regards the children’s playground. There
was $25,000 available, but Mr. DiSalvo was going to check into another $20,000 to use as
opposed to doing a walkway. Ms. Drenski said that the extra $20,000 is not available. She
believes the $25,000 available will be used for playground equipment. Mr. Baxter added that
there was an article in the Sun Herald about Linden Park spending $75,000 for first class
playground equipment. If they spend that much and the Rec Center spends $25,000, will the
equipment be good, fair, poor? Ms. Drenski said good; the equipment is comprised of modular
units that can have additions in the future. Mr. Jesse commented that there are grant
opportunities available. There was some discussion in Council, brought up in Committee, that the
project start at $25,000. Historically, about five or six years ago, Clague Park put in $60,000
worth of equipment. (overlapping discussion). There should be no liability issues with the new
equipment. Mr. Baxter continued by saying that the Linden Park was described as two separate
areas, one for older children and one for younger children. Ms. Drenski said there is some
equipment that will stay; a slide and swings and the new equipment would be used by children
ages six to twelve, generally. Mr. Baxter asked if other playgrounds were seen as example; Ms.
Drenski replied affirmatively.

Mario Capus (DJ Skate Music)

Ms. Drenski reported to the Commission that, in the past, Mario Capus was being paid by a
purchase order every month. This has been changed to a certain amount per appearance. For
example, for September through August he was paid $12,772. This past season he was paid
$9,550. He's happy with the situation. This indicates a savings of $3,222 a year.

This concluded the report of the Assistant Commissioner for the Commissioner.

Report of the Safety Director

Commissioner Performance

Mr. Jesse commented that it’s good to see the Recreation Commissioner making changes such as
these and effectuating accomplishment. He further complimented Mr. DiSalvo and Ms. Drenski
by recognizing their hard work every day to put the budget in a more positive perspective.
Page 4
