Minutes of a Meeting of the
North Olmsted Parks and Recreation Commission
September 12, 2005

as much use as that softball field gets, there should have been no problem. Mr. Kelley asked if
there were any complaints from the people who live around the area. Ms. Jones said that she
merely was saying that the Recreation Commission never approved it, so she would like to know
why the fence is in as a permanent. Phase II of Diamond Two was handled through Safety and
Building, according to Mr. DiSalvo and Mr. Limpert.

Rotary Building

Ms. Jones asked about the Rotary Building. Mr. Limpert said that they are trying to get together
with them to do the repair or come up with some of the financing for the repair. It’s not a pretty
sight and is dangerous. This year Norm Musial is in charge of the Rotary, so Mr. Limpert had a
conversation with him at Homecoming, and they will be in touch with each other. Mr. DiSalvo
said it’s a safety hazard.

Homecoming

There was general conversation among the members about how well Homecoming went,
especially since there was perfect weather except for a short time on Saturday and the best
attendance. Community Council made 30% over $30,000; in all the years of Homecoming, Ms.
Jones thought it happened only one other time; otherwise it would be 25% up to $30,000. Ms.
Jones thanked the Commissioner and the Rec Department for contributing to the conditions of the
Park during the Homecoming.

NEW BUSINESS

Hockey Pro Shop

The Safety Director reported that there is a company interested in leasing out the Pro Shop space
for hockey pro shop. The basic offer is $4,400 per year. He did not know if that figure was rich
enough; he thought the Rec Department would want something sweeter than that. The question
brought before the Commission: are we interested in pursuing it? They are talking $400 a month
August through March and $300 a month April through July. They will also do the skate
sharpening for free for our rental skates, which is a big savings. What do we make out of the Pro
Shop? Mr. DiSalvo said that the Rec Center is netting perhaps $5,000 because it can’t compete
with the pricing and does not have the proper inventory. It also eats up a large portion of payroll
trying to man it. Actually, it’s not being manned the way it should be. It’s like trying to get an
appointment with a specialist to get ice skates sharpened because no one is ever there. This
would be subcontracted out. Ms. Kanis said that there definitely needs to be skate sharpening.
Mr. Limpert said that the company is called Cleveland Hockey Supply and, as he understands it,
their major store is on Brookpark Road; there is a satellite store in the rink in the Arctic Freeze
Arena in Chagrin Falls; and they would like to make North Olmsted a third location.
