Minutes of a Meeting of the
North Olmsted Parks and Recreation Commission
December 4, 2006

Community Council

Ms. Jones said that Community Council will be buying more benches for the Park. The Council does
not know how many yet. When the new bathrooms are completed at the Senior Center, Community
Council will pay for a water line to go over to the big Pavilion as well as put new shades in the Cabin.
Community Council is also working toward putting money away to fix the Gazebo sometime in the
near future.

Rae Ann Thomas asked what Community Council did. Ms. Jones replied that Community Council is
one of the North Olmsted organizations. Its source of revenue is from Homecoming, from the rides,
and this year Community Council made about $10,000. That money was put aside, and then the
Council decides what it wants done with the money. The Pavilion originally cost about $40,000; now
there is about $8,000 to work with and will begin building up that sum for future use. Council also
uses part of it is money for scholarships.

Volunteers for Bleachers

Ms. Powell asked about volunteers to paint the bleachers in the Ice Rink. Mr. Garrity said that he was
a co-signer on a letter to the Mayor, signed as President of the Hockey Club. With Ted DiSalvo’s
help, he is figuring out the particulars on how to get it done, what kind of paint to use and when to do
it. There is a gentleman in the Club who works for Home Depot, so he will provide the Rec with the
paint. He will have someone come to the Rec to see what is required as far as oil base or latex
because the Rec doesn’t want a smell around the Ice Rink. Whenever you open up to many
volunteers, there is a lot of caution, because things can get out of hand. The suggestion was made that
perhaps four or six can come in at night when the cleaning crew is here to get it done so that it’s
almost dry before the Rec Center opens for business. In conversation with Mr. DiSalvo, Mr. Garrity is
getting it done. Hopefully, it will be done so that we can continue to have a high school team here.
The exterior boards are missing, and are being shored up, and the crew is starting to replace the top
boards in the studio, which is wood now, with plastic, to eliminate slivers. There are many skaters
that can get into a problem. Ted DiSalvo, Betsy Drenski, Anna Kanis and John Dailey have really set
the tone, and things can be seen happening now. It’s a good, positive move. A little bit being done
goes a long way, because a lot of it is perception.

Rec Personnel Improvement

The maintenance staff and supervision staff bend for the NOHC in getting people on and off the ice
and cleaning and cutting the ice. The Rec, with Ted’s and Betsy’s input, have really changed the
personnel’s handling of people to become more professional and friendly at the Rec Center. For
example, on Sunday, there was an ice cut coming up, between games, and personnel (particularly
Jason and Jim) were quite professional. Rae Ann Thomas also noted that someone at the desk
practically walked her to the meeting of the Rec Commission, and she was just astounded at this,
compared to the way it has been done in the past. Mr. Garrity said that teams from out of state were
Page 5
