Minutes of a Meeting of the
North Olmsted Parks and Recreation Commission
January 9, 2006
Page Four

That currently looks very positive. Ms. Jones asked about the $127,400. Mr. Terbrack said that was
the original total cost of the project; there could be small variances, but the local part the Rec Center is
doing is for $14,000. The rest of the money will go for restroom renovations and to meet the ADA
requirements. Mr. Baxter asked about the Pavilion. Mr. Terbrack said that is a separate project. Mr.
DiSalvo said that Home Depot would be donating all the supplies for the Pavilion project. Mr. Baxter
said he thought it important that the project be completed and asked if it was roped off. Mr. DiSalvo
said it’s been roped off three times, and each time it gets torn down. There is currently orange fencing
around the project, but sometimes kids get back there and vandalize the area. Mr. Barker asked if
someone checked the area during the day every day – is it the Rec’s responsibility or the Service
responsibility? The Commissioner said it should be the Rec Department’s responsibility. Mr.
Terbrack said that, luckily, there hasn’t been the snow problem yet on the roof. Everything will be
referred to the Master Plan.

Mr. Terbrack then handed a copy of the Master Plan around the table for the Commission members to
review.

This concluded the Report of the Safety Director.

OLD BUSINESS

Hockey Club

Mr. Garrity said that if the Hockey Club had money to do something at the Rec Center, can the
Hockey Club work with the City and contractors in getting a project done. The reason is that the
Hockey Club gave the Rec $14,000 to have the Boards done. It’s no one’s fault because the crew
can’t work on ice when everyone is using it. What has come about is that our locker rooms are really
lacking in size for varsity, bantam and even the pee wee teams. The suggestion was brought up to
enlarge a couple of the rooms being done at the one far corner of the rink, which would be the north
east corner – it’s a big, open area. Two blocked walls, some type of ceiling with lights and a locker
room would be desired, but in order for the Hockey Club to do something like that, what guidelines
are needed to pursue the improvements. Mr. Garrity said he knows the City’s hands and the Rec
Center’s hands are tied in a lot of ways when there is money available. There are a few hockey
directors involved who are trying to build up the program from the ground up. The Hockey Club
wants to stay a tenant and wants to become a bigger tenant. One way to bring people in the Rec is to
have better and cleaner locker rooms. North Olmsted is one of the few places where both teams are
together. It’s usually not a problem, but everyone knows teenagers – their mouths go – and it would
be a surefire way to separate them on opposite sides of the rinks to defuse any kind of problem. The
Hockey Club wants to know what its options are.
Page 4
