Only one Plan
excluded the Rink, but in all candor, he believes that the Westlake proposal throws a wrench into the
gears.

Mr. DiSalvo asked how much was lost when Strongsville built a Rink. Mr. Garrity said it was very
little. If there is a Rink built in Westlake, however, there are three clubs that will be affected: one’s
River, one’s North Olmsted, and one’s Elyria – because it will be right in our back yard. Then again,
it might be two rinks, because Elyria is an outdoor Rink. They start late because they are dictated by
the weather, by virtue of which they always have cold ice. People want to know what is happening
ahead of time so that they are not the last ones to go.

Mr. Barker asked about the conditions last Saturday – was Mr. Garrity saying that the freezing wasn’t
working properly: Mr. Garrity said that was correct, or there was too much water put down. Mr.
Barker said he knew there were two power outages last week that concerned City Hall on Friday. Did
the power outage affect the Rec Department Friday? Mr. DiSalvo and Ms. Drenski said the outage
did not affect the Rec Department. On Wednesday, there was a power outage as well; could that
affect the ice equipment three days away? Mr. DiSalvo did not believe so. Mr. Garrity said the ice
was fine Wednesday night.

Mr. Garrity said that it’s hard to tell the parents if the compressors aren’t working or if there is too
much water down. Mr. Barker asked if a suggestion could be made that someone talk to whoever was
in charge for cutting the ice on Saturday and get back to Mr. Dailey and Mr. Garrity. Ms. Drenski
said this will be done; she would have addressed the problem a lot sooner had she known about it.
Whoever was cutting the ice and was having problems should have addressed the matter with their
supervisor.

Mr. Garrity said there is a concern about the compressors, because that’s what keeps the ice cold.
The Club needs a little assurance going into the season that the ice will be cold.

Ms. Powell said that in the article that Mr. Dailey was referring, didn’t the City of Westlake say that
they could not, as a City, support financially an ice rink; it was too costly and expensive. Therefore,
that’s why they went the route of bringing in a private organization to do that for them. Does this
raise an issue which we in North Olmsted need to examine? Can we afford such an expensive venture?
If Westlake can’t afford it; how can we? Mr. Dailey said that other cities have eliminated the rink –
Parma Heights got out of it; but we’ll see what we can do.

Mr. Sanborn said that he has been around the Rec Department ever since the Rink was built. It was
put together on a shoestring, and it’s been run on a shoestring. The compressors are going on 30
years old. Thirty years is really pushing the compressors.
