Minutes of a Meeting of the
North Olmsted Parks and Recreation Commission
June 2, 2008

back to the late Joe Hyland – his work with Ted had it all set up that it would come down when it did,
and they followed up on their word.

REPORT OF THE COMMUNITY LIFE SERVICES DIRECTOR

Mr. Dailey had two things to discuss:

Skateboard Competition

June 28, 2008, there is a not-city sponsored skateboarding competition going on at the Skate Park.
Rae Anne Thomas is going to put together the next event for the kids to use for their fundraiser to put
in the extra ramps that they had received donated this past year. There will be good sponsors; lots of
things donated, so it should be a nice event for the kids.

Relay for Life

There will be a Relay for Life at North Olmsted High School for the American Cancer Society.
Currently there are over 28 or 29 teams walking 20 hours, some people the entire time. Mr. Dailey
recommends that the Commission go to the School to support it; it’s a great community event for
stnd
those who stopped out last year. It starts June 21 at Noon and goes through Sunday, June 22 at
8:00 a.m. The Illuminating Ceremonies are very nice at nightfall with the bags lit up; Terry Groden
will be doing the MC’ing for that. Bring your names along with someone else. If you or know of a
st
cancer survivor there’s a free lunch put on right about 12:00 Noon on the 21. Last year North
Olmsted partnered with Fairview Park and raised just under $70,000. This year Fairview is going back
to holding their event, so we’ll be on our own. North Olmsted has about twice the amount of teams
that we had last year that are involved. There is entertainment the entire time with bands. Bring some
dollars and support the people as they run around the track. There will be luminaries sold. Terry will
have coffee. Mr. Groden said he would be assisted by Linda Dawson, who does on-air work for
WDOK. He said the whole event is a lot of fun – he and his wife took their kids last year, and they
did not want to go home. Mr. Dailey said there will constantly be things going on.

Recreation Plan

Mr. Dailey said that the Recreation Plan, as he was sure everyone read in the papers the last couple
weeks that North Olmsted broke off conversation with the Greater Cleveland YMCA. The more the
City talked with them, the less they did not like some of the things they did not hear, so it’s best the
City broke it off before going further down the path with them. It was neither fault of the YMCA nor
fault of the City; it was decided to go in different directions. With that in mind, there is currently on
th
the ballot for tomorrow evening’s council meeting that initially went from 1/8 of one percent tax
th
increase to 1/6 of one percent. He did not know whether the City is talking about 20 years or 30
years or what the term is at this point in time; the legislation has not yet been prepared in its entirety
yet to present to the Commission. The City is looking to go out for the tax increase with the
Page 6
