Minutes of a Meeting of the
North Olmsted Parks and Recreation Commission
January 5, 2009

Assistant Commissioner Comments

Special Olympics

Ms. Drenski said that the Special Olympics went well. They were very happy to be here; it was a
great function. Not as many skaters showed up than they had originally thought, but they were so
happy to be here. Ms. Drenski said the Rec Department will keep communicating with the Special
Olympics contact to see if their programs can come to the Rec in the future. Ms. Drenski was not sure
of the logistics being worked out for them, but she was going to try to keep bringing them to the
North Olmsted Rink.

Santa Skate

Ms. Drenski also wanted to mention the Santa Skate. Chris Scarl’s son, Brett, was Santa, and he did a
great job. The Rec had a great Santa skate this year. Four big bins full of food were collected for the
food cupboard, and it was very busy this year. It was a great event this year and helped to consolidate
the two holidays together. Mr. DiSalvo said that Brett did a great job in the summer program as well;
he’s great with kids.

National Figure Skating Championship

Ms. Drenski said that, just to mention it, the National Figure Skating Championship will be coming to
Cleveland in a few weeks. Hopefully soon they are supposed to start advertising to go to your local
th
rink on the 24 of January from 10-12. All the rinks are supposed to have that time available for open
skate. The Rec always does an event for National Skate in January, but we have to pick it when it’s
best for our rink. The skaters come in for that whole week, beginning with Martin Luther King Day,
many are here. These are the U.S. Nationals. Even without the U.S. Nationals being here, this has
always been a great day for the kids at the Rink. We have all our instructors come in and offer free
lessons to try to get kids interested in skating.

This concluded the report of the Recreation Commissioner.

Mr. Groden asked if there were any questions. There being none, he handed the floor over to the
Director of Community Life Services, John Dailey.

REPORT OF THE COMMUNITY LIFE SERVICES DIRECTOR

Julie Nader

Mr. Dailey began by recognizing Julie Nader, the mother of Sam Nader, an Ignatius hockey player
voted Most Valuable Player in what tournament? Julie replied it was the Shaker Tournament. Mr.
Dailey said it was just before Christmas. Julie said that, playing defense, he scored four goals. There
has been only one loss for the team. Everyone commented it was a great job. Julie said there is also a
Page 4
