Minutes of a Meeting of the
North Olmsted Parks and Recreation Commission
January 5, 2009

2009 Budget

Within the next week or two, the proposed budget of the Parks and Recreation Commission should be
available; we will be able to talk more about this at the next meeting of the Commission, showing
revenue, expenses and capital projects.

Mr. Groden asked if there were any more questions for Mr. Dailey. There being none, this concluded
the report of the Community Life Services Director.

OLD BUSINESS

None

NEW BUSINESS

Synthetic Ice

Mr. Groden asked, for the record, if rinks could possibly be set up with synthetic ice (he had noticed

this at Wade Park Oval recently). He wasn’t sure about the technology or exactly how it works, but
he knew that it was synthetic. Out of curiosity, he Googled synthetic ice, and he saw there are
applications for using it for rinks for skating and hockey. Is that a possibility that the Rec would like
to see? Mr. Dailey said that the biggest challenge would be just figuring out how good it would be for
our competition. Obviously, if it would be for a skate around the park it might be sufficient, but to
have it used for competitive playing, we would have to see the results on that. If it turns out to be
that it was as good and there was less cost over time, of course, it would be worth looking into. Ms.
Drenski said it would do for outside or inside for a practice area to warm up children before a game,

but she did know any rink that would use it full scale. Mr. DiSalvo said thatyou can’t shut off the
Studio Rink because it’s still connected to the Main Rink. You would still have to clean up little
plastic shavings with some sort of sweeper; Ms. Drenski did not know much about it. Mr. DiSalvo
thinks that you have to put some sort of solution over the synthetic ice. Mr. Groden said he did read
regarding the rink at Wade Park Oval, that every certain period of time – every week or two weeks –
they had to spray the surface. Ms. Nader asked if you put it down and picked it up in pieces; Mr.
Dailey said he thinks it snaps together. Mr. Groden admitted he did not know a lot about how it
works and that maybe it’s not practical now, but used down the road if the technology continues to
advance, we may get to that point. You know, at one point, it used to be that football was only played
on grass; we saw what happened there. He certainly would not want to go to this option even down
the road if it compromised safety.

New Rec Center

Mr. Scarl asked Mr. Dailey if, in ’09, there would be anything with a new Rec Center. Mr. Dailey said
there would be nothing this year because of the current financial crunch the City of North
Page 6
