Minutes of a Meeting of the
North Olmsted Parks and Recreation Commission
June 1, 2009

Other visitors indicated that they were unhappy with the current situation as well: they have kids at
North Olmsted who will not swim for $95; yet they want their kids to compete with the kids from
North Olmsted. Mr. Scarl was in agreement with all of them.

(Overlapping conversation among the attendees of the meeting).

Mr. Dailey said that Chris Wetmore is not a member of this Commission, but one of the things he did
find out was that none of the other communities offer discounts to their high school swimmers to
participate in programs. He called every one of the Southwest conference teams and got the same
answer across the board. Mr. Dailey heard what all the visitors are saying, but unless there is a
guarantee that 32 or 36 more people coming in and signing up tomorrow, he did not believe it would
be worth it. With the economy, there are no more “sacred cows” in North Olmsted. We have to look
at everything we do from top to bottom – every line, every division, every employee – to make sure
that what we are doing makes sense to the residents. We may hear that maybe last year there were 24
to 32 people on the team; Mr. Dailey wants to see the numbers first.

As an aside to Chris Scarl – he didn’t know if Chris was still involved with Hot Stove - Mr. Dailey
said that there are numbers down everywhere – he knows that Hot Stove is down this year; parents are
cutting back everywhere they have to. This might be just one of the areas that they may have
participated for $20 or $40 or somewhere in the middle, but at $95 they just can’t afford it this year.

Mr. Scarl then asked Mr. Dailey about other cities not giving a discount - what are the fees of the
Southwest conference? Maybe they’re not charging fees at all…to say that there’s no discount, Mr.
Scarl would like to know what the fees are. Mr. Dailey said there was a fee associated with it; he just
knew from conversation with Chris Wetmore that he did verify there was a fee. Mr. Scarl would like
to have those fees before we…Mr. Dailey said that would be fine but, that makes the conversation this
evening moot. We’re not going to have those numbers. Mr. Scarl said that we have them. Mr.
DiSalvo said that those numbers come from the Rec; he did not know how accurate…Ms. Troyer said
he could call up and ask what the fee was. Again, Mr. DiSalvo said that he had the information and
that it would be more than fair to have Chris (Wetmore), who did all the research, here.

Todd Troyer said that we were on the Agenda to be here, right? Mr. DiSalvo said, “no.” Ms. Troyer
said that he called and talked to John (Dailey) in April and asked to be put on the Agenda for this
evening. So, if we’re not on the Agenda for this evening, there’s someone on your end that’s not
doing their part.

One of the visitors that did not identify herself said she had information that discounts weren’t given to
SWC schools; however, she knew that Rocky River is letting their club swimmers swim for $25 that
swim in their league only; and she would said that most of those club swimmers were high school
swimmers. Also, Lakewood is also allowing its swim club members to swim for $25 for their swim
fees only. She would also like to point out, too, that as members of the swim club boosters, they feel
that they have done a lot for competitive swimming here at the North Olmsted Rec Center. She
knows in 2000 that the Boosters raised money to have an electronic timing system installed here. Five
years ago they raised money to fund the scoreboard that’s there. Two years ago they used money
Page 4
