Minutes of a Meeting of the
North Olmsted Parks and Recreation Commission
September 14, 2009

REPORT OF THE COMMUNITY LIFE SERVICES DIRECTOR

Revenues from Coke

Mr. Dailey reported that Ted (Disalvo) mentioned about the Coke revenues coming in and the arcade
games revenues coming in through the Rec Center. Both contracts are coming up for renewal and are
st
going for requests for proposal shortly. The Coke contract expires December 31 and the arcade
games contract expires in January. The requests for proposals on Coke will go out in two weeks: Mr.
Dailey will have it out to get in some new offers. Betsy assisted; she sent out an e-mail to the Ohio
people who are Recreation Department personnel, and received a lot of responses. Mr. Dailey said we
are going to ask for a lot more this year. When it was done ten years ago it was the first time the City
of North Olmsted had done something like this. It was done by Mary Creadon at that point in time. It
probably wasn’t done as well as, for example, the schools and their contract with Pepsi (again, the
schools are a lot bigger user of Pepsi products) but regardless, we are going to be looking for a lot
more extended fees, upfront money. As regards advertising, we pretty much gave it away ten years
ago, so we’re going to try to get a better deal for the City the next time around.

Mr. Scarl had a question: are there any machines left up by the softball diamonds? Mr. Dailey said
that there is one by Field #2 and one inside the Senior Center. The one at Field #4 will be replaced.
Mr. Scarl thinks it’s been gone about two years. Mr. Dailey was at Westlake’s Park by the Rec
Center, and they have an M&M candy vending machine as well. We are looking to drum up some
more revenue. Mr. Scarl asked if Mr. Dailey thought that Coke will be making changes or will it be
the other way around. Mr. Dailey said that, if he read the first contract right, Coke has the Right to
First Refusal e.g., matching offers we get from anyone else. Someone else came in with the Dr.
Pepper line; Cotton Club, those types of things. Pepsi is going to bid on it. We should do something,
and if it’s Coke, fine; if not, fine.

Revenues from Arcade Games

The arcade games contract will be up as well in January; we are going out to bid on that; hopefully
will get some local competition. The Pin Ball Shop is interested in bidding on it as well as some of the
other area companies. We are looking to getting some better games; we have received a few
complaints; the arcade game industry changes so fast that some of the games we have now are dated.

Skate Park

To revisit some of the damage being done in the Skate Park: we have had some damage being done
by the use of bikes in the Skate Park. The original Skate Park was built for skateboards only. The
bikes are damaging through their metal spokes, chipping away at the concrete, with a physical hazard
being created for those who are on the skateboards. Mr. Mahoney sponsored legislation to eliminate
bikes at the Skate Park. We are going to have a new sign at the Skate Park. Ted (DiSalvo) is
working on it with Rae Anne Thomas, who is our “guardian angel” for the Skate Park. The sign will
clearly spell out what is allowed and what is not allowed at the Skate Park. Mr. DiSalvo asked what
Page 5
