Recreation Commission Meeting
August 3, 2003
Page Two

classes would be on Tuesdays and Thursdays and the evening classes would be Mondays and
Wednesdays. There will be a minimum of eight people required for each class, covering the
instructor fee, based on $160/month. The average month will allow for eight classes. Residents
will pay $20/month ($2.50) per class in advance (use it or lose it). If the Rec Center exceeds the
minimum of eight, any monies will go back into the program. There is a concern that the Rec is
just out to make money, but that money will go towards training for the aerobics instructor for
continuing educating or new music. Adjustments to billing will be made based on availability and
any holidays that may fall on a scheduled class date.

All of the above is tentative, based on Mr. DiSalvo’s meeting tomorrow with the Mayor’s
secretary to book Tuesday and Thursday from 8:45-9:45 a.m. at the Community Cabin. Evening
classes will be held Monday and Wednesday from 7:00-8:00 p.m. at the Senior Center.

Barring the unavailability of the Cabin, the classes will not be billed. That way, the exercise
patrons get to keep their classes for a lower cost. The instructor is getting paid and the Rec’s not
losing money.

There’s no other place to have aerobics classes at the Rec Center. The evening classes might
average between 10-15 participants; the morning classes might average four. There’s such a
disparity that this arrangement will work best for the Rec Center.

rd
The last class was on July 23. Hopefully, everyone is pleased with the new arrangement, and the
Rec may continue to expand the aerobics program until the change.

Mr. DiSalvo commented that the gym floor, because of its give, is unacceptable for safety
concerns using the spring floor as an exercise floor and its inconsistency to regularly cover the
expense of aerobic instructors relative to the income generated for the program. The instructor
must alter her routines to teach at the Senior Center/Community Cabin as on a firm floor. Mr.
Baxter stated that he typically has seen classes at the Y with steps, weights, etc. Mr. DiSalvo
replied that the Rec Center has steps and people bring weights. Aerobics and cardio conditioning
will be the classes at the Senior Center.

Not everyone was pleased with this arrangement; there are taxpaying residents who expect their
taxes to pay for everything at the Rec Center. Almost every program must sustain itself; some
programs bring in enough to cover others. The aerobic program adds up; the instructor makes
$20/hour+.

Page 2
