Recreation Commission Meeting
December 1, 2003

The striping has been accomplished. The outside area has been cleaned up, and the curb painting
has been finished. The signage has been detailed.

Personnel Matters

Mr. Jesse said that he and Mr. DiSalvo discussed the personnel restructuring issues. When the
Commissioner is not at the Rec things tend to get out of hand, so to have another person in
charge will be a plus for the Department.

Security

The Rec Center is continuing with Joe Rice, who will be meeting with Messrs. Jesse and DiSalvo
on Thursday of this week towards the next phase of the security plan. The Rec is becoming very
close to being a very secure place to be. People are getting used to being asked questions; they
are getting used to not being able to bring things in; they are getting used to metal detection and
random testing. The mindset is now being put upon the general public so that all of these things
are not a big surprise, even on a recreational basis.

Friday Night Skate

As regards Friday Night Skates, there has been a positive response from the people attending.

Spring Brochure

The Rec Center is trying to speed up as far as possible a spring brochure, so that people can sign
up earlier than they did before and also increase the offerings. Interest is still strong in a fitness
center. The Fire Department got a grant to increase its fitness programs, a combination if
wellness and equipment grant. The Department does baselines such as cholesterol and heart
readings, etc., tracking progress through the implementation of the fitness programs. Once the
City sees how the Fire Department’s program works, there could be a spinoff for the Rec
Department. Ms. Kanis asked if one could sign up for programs on line: not yet, but it’s coming
with the new computer system.

This concluded the Report of the Safety Director.

NEW BUSINESS

Meeting Date

Ms. Hayes stated that there was some discussion last month about changing the meeting date so
that the financials could be more current. Everyone was not in attendance in November, and she
asked if a date change was something the board members wanted to do. From her own
Page 6
