Recreation Commission Meeting
March 3, 2003

Mr. DiSalvo replied that, even if someone is being paid $8.00 an hour, it should be affordable.
Mr. Limpert asked if there were other tasks someone in the ticket booth could be handling to
make the time more productive, and the Commissioner replied in the affirmative. The supervisor
has a cell phone to contact other employees. The Commissioner would like to get staff shirts and
badges to identify the staff. It was also suggested that laid-off school crossing guards might be
asked to assume positions early in the morning to man the ticket booth. The booth itself will also
be modified and made more spacious, user-friendly, and safer.

Mr. Wetmore was asked about his background. He stated he worked for Ann Arbor public
schools, which did the recreation for the City of Ann Arbor, which was quite large. The City
probably had 300-400 softball teams during the year. The City also had baseball, about 100
teams. The City had the school fields and the parks fields. It was a large schedule. Chris lives in
Brook Park and grew up in Middleburg Heights, graduating from Eastern Michigan University.

Mr. DiSalvo then spoke of the Recreation Center’s physical building evaluation:

?

$7,000 – pool pump
?

$60,000 – heaters for tennis area (now 28 years old)
?

Restroom at the North Olmsted Park has pipes rotting - $40,000
?

Bleachers in pool - $30,000
?

Outdoor pool filtration system is running on borrowed time
?

Outdoor pool has constant leaks and is hollow underneath – Health Department will watch for
safety; the Recreation Center is not to the point of replacement. Closing the pool may
generate the interest to replace it
?

Pool locker room lockers being repaired
?

Ceiling tiles in the building need replacement
?

Emergency lighting needs attention – three weeks ago the power went out in the ice rink. If
the lighting goes out in the rink area, the controls are in the tennis area. The lighting sensors
throughout the building are not located in the correct areas; wiring and panels must be
corrected. Each panel runs between $8,000-$15,000, about eight panels in the Center
?

Plumbing valve for indoor swimming pool actually facing backwards in the pool and needs to
be replaced. The back flow preventer must be turned around and two main supply lines need
to be repaired
?

Cleaning contract less expensive than having our crew-park jobs as well
?

Replace facia support holding up dummy wall because there are 10-15 beams rotting; if they
break off, they will wobble and wave, distorting the facing
?

Insulation on the tennis roof is leaking
?

The gym heater is getting old
?

The Recreation Center needs replacement of equipment (tractor, truck, etc)
Page 5
