Recreation Commission Meeting
November 3, 2003

responded, no, but they did a number of years ago. All efforts were spent on field two with
hoses. Anything else was just too difficult. The fields become very difficult [to water] in July and
always when there is a summer drought. A NOSO member discussed the matter of irrigation
with Mr. Jesse, and it was decided that it would be too cumbersome to get involved with cutting
up fields. A sprinkler system is much more practical. Ms. Kanis agreed with Mr. Kelley that a
sprinkler system would be the way to go and wonderful for North Olmsted. Mr. DiSalvo said that
the Rec Department will work with the Service Department on this matter for NOSO. Ms. Hayes
said that the next step would be for the Recreation Committee to present this situation to Council
for approval. Mike Gareau is the Chair of that Committee. Ms. Hayes suggested to NOSO that
they present the cost of the water and their documentation to the Recreation Committee as soon
as possible to further the matter.

Mr. Saunders then stated that his conversations with Mr. Friedl indicated that the field should be
ready by the first two weeks of June for camp. Mr. Friedl would come to North Olmsted six
weeks prior to that and, during the week that they were here, they would figure out what they
would need to do as regards seating. Who does Mr. Friedl need to speak with to make the
ground level, etc.? What are the permits needed, if any, to make that happen? There will only be
six weeks to grow the grass. Certainly, in the groundskeeper's mind, that's do-able. Blackburn
and his crew are familiar with this climate. Ms. Hayes proposed that Mr. Friedl's coming in to re-
work the fields for nothing is a "hook" for the City to do the water line. Also, a NOSO member
explained, Brad Frield asked for four fields: give him the most distant fields. If there is any cost
absorption, he'll be absorbing the most cost. That's another "hook." NOSO will also take
responsibility for six weeks of watering. Another NOSO member said that even if he (Mr. Friedl)
didn't get approval, all the goal mounds need to be fixed anyway. There's already a mess there.

Through an exchange between NOSO and Kay Callett (sp?), Director of Ohio Northern, the
governing body for soccer in Northern Ohio, who is the middle person between Mr. Friedl and
Mr. Saunders(?), the commitment was that the camps were being publicized. The first camp is a
goalie camp open to anyone. The second week is an invitation-only camp and is a national camp.
This is very much a premier-level soccer camp. They have already made hotel accommodations in
North Olmsted. He had a name here. He's from Bay Village. He has a lot riding on making sure
that these fields are ready. For him to do all this and walk away would be bad for him. Coupled
with the commitment that he's going to make to it, hopefully this would be something that would
be an annual thing. Last year Friedl held camp at Oberlin College, and the reason he did not go
back was because the dorms were not air conditioned, and he gave the same offer to them to
improve their fields and they refused. He wants to play on professional fields. Ms. Hayes said
that, for the City, the kind of fields North Olmsted will have will be wonderful. Ms. Jones said
that the water line will need to be in by April. NOSO agreed.
Page 10
