Recreation Commission Meeting
September 8, 2003
Page Eleven

Baseball Diamond

Ms. Jones asked about the baseball issue. Mr. Disalvo said that the high school does not have
the money that the Commission was led to believe, so that project has been shelved. The high
school had proposed that Field #4 be made a varsity only field at their expense. They would
trade out #1 to another softball field, and the fields would be angled differently. Mr. Jesse said
that Dave Perkins and Tom Stein mapped out this proposal, but it has been shelved until next
year, and Hot Stove will be willing to help out.

Pool Bleachers

Mr. DiSalvo reported that, as to the pool bleachers, the Legal Department is in the process of
st
finalizing the contract that needs to be signed, with a deadline of November 1. Mr. Jesse said
that the specs don’t look like a lot, but because of the liability issues, there are a lot of
requirements for the contract. The Rec Department had a choice to use a standard contract or
one that the Law Department would approve.

Ms. Hayes asked for any more comments from the Commission.

Coke Contract

Mr. DiSalvo stated that there is a Coke contract since 1999 after a generous Coke contribution
to the Rec Center, and that any soft drinks sold in North Olmsted Parks must be Coke products.
The beverage issue came up with Community Council’s Homecoming vendors, and this must be
included with any agreement signed with them in the future. Mr. Gareau said that Coke did not
come here to play hardball; Coke wants to be a corporate citizen of North Olmsted. Our
responsibility is to go back to Coke for a four-day window (Homecoming), when other products
may be used. Mr. Jesse observed that there are certain cities that are Coke cities and certain
cities that are Pepsi cities, and neither the twain shall meet; to which Ms. Hayes said that the
schools are Pepsi, and Community Council is neither/nor. Mr. Gareau said that the discussions
of Coke in 1999 were more than they should have been. Everyone was concerned with money
going here and there, and no one was concerned with what kind of pop could be served in the
park at Homecoming.

Dogs in Parks

Also, there are no dogs allowed in the parks, and Ms. Hayes noted that many people just brought
their dogs into the car show. Mr. Gareau said he’s seen people chased out of the parks while
they were sitting in bleachers watching a game. Mr. Baxter said use the parks for parks, not just
ballfields, and let people bring in their dogs.
Page 11
