Randall Angle Hearing
February 28, 1985
Page 3
Detective Mason stated that during his second interview with Mr. Angle, Mr. Angle
did state that regarding his Lawson's employment he had quit but that he might have
been about to be fired and that he did receive reprimands.
Mr. Angle then inquired as to his ranking and Secretary Westerfeld stated he ranked
V. He then inquired as to how many candidates were on the list and Secretary
Westerfeld did not have that information and so stated.
Mr. Angle stated that during the polygraph exam Detective Viola told him that he was
answering the questions correctly and that during the second interview with Detective
Mason he answered the questions with more honesty. He also stated that during his
employment with Lawsons he cut the tip of his finger off and that he had a problem
with his boss. He stated that he can remember being in court once and that was for
failure to stop at a stop sign. Mr. Angle stated that this happened because he was
in a hurry to get his dog to the vet after being hit by a car.
law Director then asked Mr. Angle if he acknowledged that he told Detective Mason
that the incident of the "open container" happened in someone's backyard. Mr. Angle
stated that he started the party there. Mr. Angle then asked Detective Mason that
since he, Detective Mason, worked about 40 hours per week, how could he remember
exactly what Mr. Angle said two months ago. law Director Gareau asked Detective Mason
if he made notes. Detective Mason stated that yes, he does, and that they are kept
on file. Detective Mason then reviewed his notes. He stated that he has two sets of
notes; one taken when the subject of interview is present and one made and expounded
upon after the subjectof interview has left. Mr. Angle then asked, generally, if
the investigative person had access to the polygraph exam, and isn't that given to
ascertain whether or not an application is telling the truth. Mr. Robert Angle asked
if he could check the polygraph to see what the results were. This was denied. law
Director Gareau then stated that the issue here is the first interview. Randall
Angle then said that if no one were taking notes at these initial interviews, the poly-
graph should be the first credibility of an applicant. At this point Law Director
explained "credibility" to Mr. Angle. He stated that at this point, statements were
made that were not truthful and that it is up to this Commission to use their common
sense regarding this matter.
Mr. Angle stated that anyone can forget something they have done in the past. Law
Director said that the details were dramatically different during the two interviews,
and that is not the same thing as "forgetting an incident." He also stated that if
Mr. Angle had told Detective Mason that he was at McDonald's and that he was with
his brother and Thad waivered the plea, we all would not be here tonight. Also, he
stated, since Mr,. Angle told the truty at the.second interview, why not the first?
Mr. Angle stated thathe went to a window at Rocky River Court and paid a $10 fine
for "open contaimer." Detective Mason stated that he has a certified Judgment Entry
and that Mr. Angle appeared in Court and waivered. Dean McKay then looked at the
Judgment Entry.amd found that it does not state whether or not Mr. Angle appeared in
Court but that :Ut does state he received the ticket at McDonald's. Law Director
Gareau then read the Judgment Entry and stated that the record shows that both .
subjects (Mr. Randall Angle and his brother) were extremely cooperative and apoligized.
At this point Mr. Robert Angle (father) stated that everyone must agree that when
you are young t1wase things happen and that he is aware that Randall has a bad work
record and that is Because he has always wanted to be a Policeman, all his life.
