c
s
CIVIL SERVICE MEETING - 3/24/88
Page #2
point our decision on this may enter. I don't know how Madeline feels
about this... Madeline: I did hear the presentation on this and I guess
we would want to know , one, if there were any other communities in the
area they cited someplace in Michigan where these tests were run
acceptably, if any other communities were using those since specific
costs they gave us $25 to $35 dollars per candidate - do they still do
those as a group like we do them, or.. Wendt: They would charge per man
it would probably be group, but it would be per man. Now say we
charge..we don't go by the man, per se, we go by the number of people
tested which is 25 and they would take their 25 and I think they would
give us a figure of considerable amount of dollars, I think they were
talking of so much per person - we don't divide it out per person
because we might have three monitors over there that we might pay $50.00
or something like that, so we're really down in terms of like $10.00 per
man or even lower than that. Chief Marsh: The impression that I got is
number one, they certainly haven't done a program in this area and are
investigating the capability of doing it to see if the interest is there
Westlake I think was very interested and they had contacted them, so
maybe they'll go into it and if they do we would certainly let you know.
Madeline: I would imagine that they are probably making proposals
within a certain area. Wendt: My position at this point, and we would
have to go over it as a commission and,,of course, Tom's not here, but I
think he kind of went along with what we talked a little bit about the
last time, I think we have to sit and wait on this to see if we can save
ourselves some bucks and use it someplace else, if we were very flush
and had no problem with it well fine we might jump into it, but at this
point I don't think it's very feasible and if they can come up with some
tangible results it terms of what happens with the people in this
community then, I see no problem twith it if it would be standard for
aaboutVbrioyw we gavewtriem, anow' weleidh avessome servers comeeUerafroml
your department and also from the fire department and we tried to
explain to them what they could observe in terms of what the men were
going to do and we do use the actual timing with a stop watch, the whole
bit, and do watch them very carefully so - out of that test two are
pretty well nationally standardized in terms of numbers and some of the
results maybe somewhat different, but if you are not having any real
problems with the physical part then I see no reason to jump into this
immediately and say hey, we're going to do this just because we feel
it's a nice thing to do right now. Chief Marsh: No problem. Wendt:
O.K. the other thing of course we would like to address while you're
here is one, trying to get some feeling on your part one more time on
when we test, (pause in discussion with entrance of Ed Boyle) ..I'm glad
Mr. Boyle walked in now we can do some of the other stuff too. Wendt:
On this testing stuff, I don't know what position the commission is
trying to do right now or at least holding at this point, is that, when
we test, and it is expensive to test, no problem with the testing of
