CIVIL SERVICE MEETING MINUTES
OCTOBER 18, 1993
PAGE 5
Tom Demaline - I am a Service Garage Foreman for N. Olmsted. Holly
Kish works for me and I am pleased with her job. Her ability now is
more than typing. She generally enters numbers. She is meeting the
requirement for her job.
Jim Hines - would you rather hire a secretary who types 45 wpm or 23
wpm.
Tom Demaline - My feelings are that if I have a fast typist who can
type letters but no numbers then I would rather have the slower typist
who is familiar with numbers. The Service Director would do the
hiring of employees not me.
Sandra Stuart - I work in the Engineering Department. I received all
the notices that told me that I had to take the Civil Service Exam. I
passed the written test. I took the typing test on July 20,.1993. I
looked around for a typewriter. The first machine I looked at did not
turn on, the second machine I went to had keys that stuck, then on the
third machine the tab did not work. I therefore had to return and use
the space bar 5 times instead of the tab. This selectric's touch was
heavier or had a stiffer feeling. The last time I used a typewriter
was when I was in school. I do spread sheets. I start with a blank
screen and put the information on the computer. I spend 40-50% of my
time doing this. Sandra's supervisor could not be here tonight so her
supervisor gave the commission a letter telling the commission how he
liked her work. Sandra was told prior to the test that you could make
7 errors and that quality was more important than quantity. When this
was said, Jim Hines asked her who said that and Sandra said Ron
Wilamoksy.
Jim Hines - asked Sandra what type of test should be given for her
job. Sandra said that Paul Deichmann does have his own secretary to
do his work. I work with a professional engineer (traffic engineer)
he wants my computer ability he is not interested in my typing
ability. I guess I would be more like a computer operator than an
secretary. We sell permits, make up complaints etc. we really do not
do secretarial work that is just what we are called. Sandra feels that
her job should be re-classified
AT THIS POINT, THE COMMISSION MET.
Ronald Janetzke - mentioned that with these two positions, a typing
test should be done away with.
Mike Gareau - said that this test is not for just those two jobs.
