D) The date for the Written and Oral Assessment test for Assistant Fire Chiefs promotional <br />exam needs to be set. Chief Lee, from the Ohio Fire Chiefs Association has recommended the <br />following dates. The Written Exam be given on Thursday, April 8, 1999 at 7:00 p.m. and the <br />Oral Assessment be administered on Saturday, April 10, 1999 starting at 9:00 a.m.. <br />Mr. Cummings asked if the dates had been checked out and would the commissioners have to <br />be present. Secretary O'Connell indicated that the commissioners did not have to be present for <br />the Assistant Fire Chief s Exam and the dates had been checked out. <br />E. Cummings motioned to accept the Assistant Fire Chiefs written exam to be given on <br />Thursday, April 8, 1999 at 7:00 P.M. and the Oral Assessment be administered on Saturday, <br />April 10, 1999 at 9:OOA.M. Seconded by L. Zolar and unanimously approved. <br />E) Mr. Cummings asked if anyone else had any new business they needed to discuss at this <br />time. Mr Jenkins, Safety Director, indicated someone brought to his attention, Rule III, <br />Section 2,(a). "The promotion of Firefighters shall be made in accordance with the provisions <br />of Section 124.45 of the Ohio Revised Code except, that no Firefighter shall be promoted to <br />the rank of Lieutenant who has not served a minimum of thirty-six (36) months or (3) years <br />within the North Olmsted Fire Department at the time of the scheduled promotional <br />examination." They felt that the minimum time served should be changed to sixty (60) months <br />or (5) years. Mr. Jenkins indicated he had brought this before the Firefighters Union, for them <br />to bring before their membership to see what their consensus was. He wanted to bring this to <br />the commissioners attention for them to discuss further at another meeting. Mr. Thomay <br />wanted to know if requiring (5) years would cut the field too much? Mr. Jenkins indicated he <br />would need to see how many people this would effect before the next meeting. Mr. Cummings <br />stated they review and update the Civil Service Handbook every two years and next year would <br />be the time for them to discuss and update this rule. Mr. Cummings asked Mr. Jenkins to gather <br />the information for the next handbook update. Mr. Cummings requested the secretary start a <br />file for any suggestions for the future update of the Civil Service Handbook. <br />VI. ADJOURNMENT: E.
