Kim thought the Hug in Mug activity was a success since it targeted a specific need. A Girl
Scout troop decorated the gift bags and made cards. Senior Center staff dropped the 40 gift bags
off at the apartments a few days ahead of Christmas. Kim thought partnering with other groups
worked well and the Commission should look for similar opportunities in the future.
Mayor's Art Show
Kim reached out to the NOHS Art Department with the suggestion regarding senior videos but
did not receive a response yet. The virtual gallery will be available the first two weeks of March.
Kim suggested having the Chair make an introductory video to include in the gallery.
Essential Worker Artwork
Kim reached out to the NOHS Art Department to gauge their interest in this project but did not
get any response. Since there seemed to be little interest on behalf of the schools and only one
Commission member volunteered to be on the committee, she wondered if this was a project the
Commission should be pursuing. Janelle thought the idea could be tabled since there was no
school interest.
Public Art: Mural
Staff reached out to Cocky's Bagels about the mural they proposed in 2019. The owner is very
excited to proceed with the mural installation and a committee meeting will be set up to discuss
the project further. Kim pointed out that the mural was discussed before the sign code update
was done so the approval process was an obstacle. The recent sign code update exempted public
art installed at the direction of the Arts Commission from requiring development plan approval
or building permits. The Commission could use this project to help create a vetting process for
future public art proposals.
Snowman Contest
Kim suggested having wording and information prepared to have a virtual snowman contest.
Since the weather is unpredictable it does not make sense to have a timed event in case it does
not snow in that time frame. If a storm is anticipated, staff can easily post the prepared language
so the community is aware. Keith suggested expanding it to a snow art contest and thought it was
a good idea to encourage the community to get outside in a safe way.
Beautification Event
The Grow Where You're Planted committee met ahead of the commission meeting. Leah said
the general concept is a themed initiative to engage residents and businesses. Under this general
theme, the commission can help with smaller projects in honor of Arbor Day or to help the city
regain its Tree City USA status. The committee would like start with a tree planting project as a
focal point that could inspire others to improve their own areas. The goal is to continue this idea
each year with different projects or areas.
Summer in the City
Kim met with the Recreation Commissioner who wants to have a series of smaller outdoor
events like a movie night, band or yoga in the park this summer. The hope is to have one each
month that would have limited numbers to ensure social distancing measures can be met while
allowing families to enjoy the parks. Other potential partners could be the Recreation
Commission and the Friends of Parks & Rec. Keith thinks the timing will work out with the
