duties. It is the intention of the parties to provide to said employees, salary continuation <br />benefits when an employee contracts an illness as herein after specified. <br />6.2 In the event that a full-time employee of the bargaining unit should become ill due <br />to contact with AIDS, HIV, Hepatitis, Tuberculosis or Meningitis and such illness has so <br />incapacitated the employee that he temporarily is unable to work, the Police Chief shall <br />investigate and determine whether the illness is work related and of a temporary nature. The <br />Police Chief shall then forward his finding to the Safety Director who shall determine the nature <br />and extent of the illness and how contracted, including circumstances thereof. If after <br />consideration of the totality of the facts the Safety Director determines that said disease was <br />contracted during employment and is of a temporary nature requiring medical leave, the Safety <br />Director shall authorize the full payment of the employee's regular salary for a periotl of ninety <br />(90) days. <br />6.3 If after ninety (90) days, an illness still temporarily incapacitates the employee, <br />the Safety Director shall recommend to Council whether to continue salary. Council shall <br />forthwith review the matter and by a majority vote determine whether the employee shall <br />continue to receive full salary during recuperation. <br />6.4 Any bargaining unit member who qualifies for benefits under this section shall be <br />requiretl to pay over to the City any amount received from the Bureau of Workers' <br />Compensation as supplemental wages. Further if at any time the City determines on the basis <br />of inedical evidence that the employee is permanently disabled and will no longer be able to <br />carry on his duties, then the City may terminate payments and insist that the Employee go on a <br />pension program. <br />6.5 Any employee that qualifies for the benefits under this Section shall not have his <br />accumulated sick time reduced because of a qualified illness which accurred while in the line of <br />duty. <br />6.6 In the event that an employee has been injured or exposed to a toxic substance <br />or to an infectious disease in the course or scope of his employment and is sent to the hospital <br />for testing, treatment andlor preventative measures, and Workers' Compensation subsequently <br />7o <br />
