Veto - Page 3
doesn't support this veto, Mr. Soloman will be working for less than eight dollars an hour
to the end of the year, a little over what CBE students would earn. Even more insulting
is the announced action by Kasler to attempt to reduce Mr. Soloman's salary for 2003 by
another $10,000, bringing him down to $16,287 per year or $7.83 per hour. No other full
time job in the City even comes close to $7.83 per hour, the lowest being the receptionist
at $8.96 per hour.
Some members of Council aze singling out "one" secretary by reducing his pay to
provide an extra amount of moneys equal to less than one tenth of one percent of the
moneys to balance the budget in what appears to be a transparent attempt to reba.lance a
balanced budget originally presented by the Mayor.
In my opinion, the action of Council in the present situation is blatantly discriminatory
and even if it is legal to single out one employee within the year, particularly after
Council approved the salary previously, this kind of aetion by Council is ethically and
morally wrong.
I hereby VETO the amendment proposed by Councilperson Kasler amending Ord.
No. 2002-117 to remove $5,100 for the year 2002 from the Mayor's secretary line
item, seconded by Couneilman Gareau and approved by Council.
