Veto - Page 3
the Police Department will provide assistance. It is the opinion of the Police
Department there is no safety issue if the dispatcher isn't replaced.
CONCLUSION
I hereby VETO Councilperson Kasler's amendmeat to 2002-117 which added an
additional $22,984 to the Foiice Staffing line i#em which is evmprised of $5,100
saved in (deducted frnm) the mayor's secretary line item and $17,8$4 remaining of
the Adelphia money and to be used for, to be earmark,ed and used for re-
instatement of auzitiary duties and school guards to be prioritized by the Police
Department in a manner that they see fit, secanded by Councilman Gareau Jr. and
passed by CoanciL
On the other hand I will support a$16,700 transfer to the Police Department: $8,000 for
auxiliary poiice purposes and $8,700 for the placement of three additional guards. Based
on the facts noted above we can monitor the spending, reinstate security patrols in both
residential neighborhoods and at schoot crossing loca.tions, and still achieve cost saving
benefrts wluie maintaining a high degree of city services. I ha.ve a hlgh regazd for the
Police Department, but I am not in favor of throwing money at it without having a prior
well-crafted plan for its total expenditure.
?
