MAINTENANCE MECHANIC <br />Nature of Work <br /> <br />This is skilled work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of <br />mechanical equipment, machinery, apparatus, and facilities at the munlctpal <br />wastewater pumping stations and treatment plant. <br />Work i nvol ves respons ib i 1 i ty for the performance of a vari ety of <br />repair and maintenance tasks in maintaining the efficient and effective <br />operation of pumping stations and wastewater treatment plant and related <br />appurtenances and facilities. Incumbents must be able to develop reasonable <br />skill in a variety of mechanical operations and to be able to use a con- <br />siderable variety of bench, hand, and machine tools requiring accuracy and <br />precision. Assignments are made to specific jobs and generally include <br />sketches, blueprints, oral , or written instructions. Work is usually <br />performed in cooperation with or under the supervision of an Assistant <br />Superintendent - Maintenance who gives detailed assistance on difficult <br />and complex jobs; however, more routine work is performed with considerable <br />independence. Supervision may be exercised over Mechanic Helpers in specific <br />maintenance and repair activities. Work is reviewed in process and upon <br />completion by superiors for proper performance and adequacy of results. <br />Examples of Work <br />Operates machine and hand tools in repairing defective parts of pumps, <br />motors, valves, chemical feeders, and related mechanical equipment and re- <br />cording devices of wastewater pumping station and treatment plant. <br />Replaces defective elements; lubricates bearings; repacks valves and <br />pumps; replaces defective valves, motors, pumps and controls, etc. <br />Performs skilled machine work, welding, steamfitting, plumbing, and <br />boiler repair; repairs chemical feeders, ch lori ne machines and heating, <br />circulating and other pumps; repairs water and steam drain lines; assists <br />in the installation of new and repairing of old steam, air, water, and <br />chemicai lines. <br />May be assigned to operate pumping station and treatment plants on. <br />assigned shift for emergency situations. <br />Occasionally operates light automotive equipment; such as, trucks, <br />front end loaders, and tractors . <br />Does 1 imi ted skilled work with lathes, dri 11 presses, and other <br />precision machining devices; and does incidental carpentry, painting, <br />masonry, and cement work. <br />Subject to 24-hour call during emergency situations. <br />Performs related work as required. <br />-162- <br />
