<br /> <br />~~ <br />Appendix B~2 <br />LABORATORY TECHNICIAN <br />Nature of Work <br />This is technical work performing a considerable volume of standard <br />chemical and bacteriological tests in the laborato ry of the municipal <br />wastewater treatment plant. <br />Incumbents in this class conduct routine laborato ry tests, technical <br />preparation of solutions and media as well as participate in the specialized <br />sampling, tests, and investigations of water quality control or industrial <br />wastewater pollution control. Tests are performed according to well de- <br />signed and standardized procedures but require accurate and skilled appli- <br />cation of laborato ry techniques as well as the competence to modify stan- <br />dard tests and develop new procedures when necessa ry. Work is performed <br />under the general supervision of the Assistant Superintendent-Plant Opera- <br />tions who provides specific instructions or new or modified procedures and <br />who inspects testing methods, results, and laboratory techniques, <br />Examples of Work <br />Performs bacteriological examinations of water samples, prepares <br />cultures and makes microscopic examinations; and reads and records results. <br />Incubates and grows bacteria for coliform plate counts; counts coliform <br />after incubation; makes bacteriological examinations of wastewater or indus- <br />trial waste samples secured from the source or from within the system during <br />the several stages of treatment. <br />Prepares, maintains, and sets up for specific operation a wide variety <br />of laboratory equipment apparatus and supplies; cleans and sterilizes labo-• <br />rato ry equipment utensils and facilities. <br />Documents, tabulates and prepares accurate reports on all tests per- <br />formed as directed by the Superintendent of the Water Pollution Control <br />Department or the Assistant Superintendent-Plant Operations. <br />Maintains supply of chemicals in laboratory; washes glassware; cleans <br />up, calibrates, and services laboratory equipment and apparatus periodically <br />when requested. <br />Performs various routine tests, such as titration, filtration, or pre- <br />cipitation; makes laborato ry tests reports and furnishes test data. <br />Conducts investigations and sampling programs of industrial waste <br />problems and wastewater flows which are of interest to the municipal water <br />pollution control program as outlined by the Superintendent. <br />Performs unusual or difficult tests by setting up, taking down, and <br />cleaning chemical and bacteriological apparatus; makes special analysis as <br />assigned by superiors. <br />-158- <br />
