Council Minutes of 6/21/88
Audience participation (cont'd):
Irene Schultz, 6725 Nancy Drive, thanked Chairman Bohlmann and the Legislative
Committee for reconsidering the cabin rates and adjusting the fees. Does not
agree that Senior Citizen Groups should not pay any rental fee for the use of
the Community Cabin. The legislation permitting them free use was established
prior to the construction of the Senior Center; they now have access to their
own building and if they want to use the Community Cabin they should pay for
that privilege as do other city groups. Mr. Bohlmann had assured Mrs. Schultz
that the rates would be reviewed again in December and she will keep on top of
this to be sure that it comes about.
-4 -
Alice Holmok, 3443 West 231st Street, also agreed that senior groups should not
be allowed free use of the Community Cabin; feels it was a fine idea twelve years
ago, before the Senior Center was built, but it is not a good idea in 1988.
Jerome Sklarek, 4620 Porter Road, and Kay Dorazio, 4610 Porter Road, jointly addressed
Council with respect to the extremely bad condition of Porter Road; not only the
deplorable condition of the road itself but the severe traffic congestion. Pre-
sented a petition to Mr. Tallon asking that the Crocker/Bassett Extension be placed
on the ballot; residents on Porter Road are tired of coping with their deplorable
situation; would welcome any alternative solutions; Porter Road was not designed
as a major artery but that is how it is being used.
Lori Davis, 4914 Hampton Drive, discussed aging safety and service equipment;
water problems; leaf pick-up; postponement of many county projects; the question. of
what Westlake would allow to be built along Crocker/Bassett; traffic signalization;
council has been. elected to serve .the residents, not to form a. dictatorship; the
Crocker/Bassett Extension should be placed on the ballot but the residents should
not be the ones to have to da it - it is somebody else's turn.
Lillian Kordish, 28541 Alden Drive, commended Lori Davis for her remarks; stands
behind her 100. Told council it has the gall to tell the residents they should
put in Crocker/Stearns to benefit Westlake and Mr. Biskind; let him gut it in and
maintain it. Is against any tax increase; objects to peddlers coming in from out
of state and displaying furniture on Zayre's parking lot; objects to automobiles
being placed on vacant lots with "for sale" signs placed on them.
Madeline Brookshire, 5140 Hampton Drive, stated that she too was against the
Crocker/Stearns Extension. Suggested council allocate money to do the traffic
synchronization study; get existing traffic travelling efficiently; give it six
to nine months; take a look at it then and reassess what needs to be done.
Joe Corrigan, 6369 Brighton Drive, did not agree with Mrs. Brookshire's taking
the council to task with respect to having the initiative to place a consent
ordinance before Council-as-a-Whole Committee. The very essence of the legis-
lative body is to have various council committees look at various issues that
are the concern of the community; they are functioning as a legislative body
should function by working through the committee system and having the committee
report back to council. Mrs. Brookshire is in error in attacking the legislative
process of the community.
John Rosek, 5073 Devon Drive, feels Crocker/Stearns Extension should be placed
on the ballot, however is concerned because no one has the faintest idea what it
is going to cost as taxpayers. A traffic problem is not unique to North Olmsted;
it exists everywhere; it does not bother him - why can't people live with it?
Feels the city's priorities are out of line; too many projects are on the back
burner; one of the most important projects, neglected for years, is the Recreation
Complex roof repair. Until money is found and allocated for this roof repair, he
cannot support any road projects in North Olmsted.
