Council Minutes of 11/20/90
Audience Partici tion (continued):
Jim Cater, 3 0 Walter Ro , as a Mr. Tallon the status of Ordinance
90-91, which had been referred to the Finance Committee.
Mr. Tallon replied that data is still being gathered and legislation
will be presented to encompass all legislative and administrative people
with regard to vacation and longevity pay.
Ruth Letwin, 6162 Fitch, addressed Ordinance 90-107. She made the point
that the majority of taxes that sate paid in North Olmsted cow from the
residents; therefore, the concerns of the residents should not be
overlooked. Mrs. Letwin felt developers and businesses have been given
enough and it is time for Council to heed the wi~hes.of residents. The
threat of a lawsuit does riot alter how residents feel about this matter.
She asked Council to please vote for the majority who want an end to the
commercialism of North OLnsted.
Loreen Davis, 4914 Hampton Drive, "This is rather short and rather
sweet--hadn't planned to speak at all. The lady has threatened to sue
us, I say let her".
Maureen Diver, 24711 Mitchell Drive, gave some excerpts from recent
publications. From Crain's Business News: a survey finds that office
vacancies are rising. Landlords are having to use such means as free
rent and decorating allowances to cut costs of office space by as much
as 20% in the suburbs. Suburbs are showing a vacancy rate to 17.8.
The rate is expected to dip even further next year. From the Wall
Street Journal: office glut will take years to work off. Many cities
have enough vacant office space to house all growth expected over the
next decade. Studies irxiicate that new construction will be needed in
some areas: the South; the West, which will account for new
construction in the 90's with California, Florida, and Georgia
accounting for a third of the demand. North Olmsted was not mentioned.
Julie Montilla, 24625 Clareshire 4103, addressed the rezoning issue.
She wondered why that small parcel of land was being rezoned. It is her
feeling that this small parcel is a symbol and a representative of what
most developers have done and contirnie to do in North Olmsted. They
take over shall areas and little by little, encroach upon a larger area.
She feels the developer must have future plans for this area that have
not been brought forward. Also, the problems of sewers anal drainage
have not been addressed in relation to this rezoning; there are already
flooding problems in this area and residents are concerned more
construction will cause further problems. She asked Council to please
listen to the people and not the threat of a lawsuit by Mr. Biskind. It
is a fact that he often goes to court to devalue Great Northern to
reduce his taxes so that now Great Northern is devalued by some ten
million dollars. The city is losing revenue because of this
devaluation. We cannot let his threats deter us from doing what is
right for the residents.
5
