Council Minutes of 03-16-2010 <br /> <br />• He had the privilege to swear in Officer Mark Goodwin to the Police Sergeant <br />position. He will be assigned to the shift of Simon Cesareo who recently resigned <br />and went to Arizona. <br />• The City of North Olmsted was awarded a grant in the amount of $995 by the <br />Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District. Grant funds will be used to purchase <br />recycling containers to be placed at Springvale Golf Course. <br />• Flags are flying at half-mast in honor of Cleveland Heights Police Officer Tom <br />Patton who died in the line of duty this past Saturday. Last night there was also <br />an officer from Elyria who passed away while on duty. <br />• Polaris Career Center will be assigning two students to work with Fleet Manager <br />Tim Conway. One student will be assisting the mechanics while another student <br />will work on welding. <br />• The year-to-date snow removal costs are approximately 15% above last year's <br />expenditures. In 2009, they were nearly $218,000 and in 2010 nearly $255,000. <br />The heavy snowfalls in early January and late February account for the increase in <br />costs. <br />• The boiler in Old Town Hall has been repaired. <br />• The second and third shifts have ended in the Streets Division. Crews are now <br />working on first shift only and are preparing for street repair work. Furlough time <br />will impact the amount of work that gets done each day. <br />• The Cultural Activities Commission will be putting out a `Call for Artists' who <br />wish to display their artwork at City Hall. The City Hall art gallery will be a <br />rotating display and preference will be given to North Olmsted artists. Contact <br />Kim Wenger in the Planning Department for more information. <br />• The `Seeds of Change Project' is a new city initiative targeting the beautification <br />of public properties. This project will begin this year with tree planting in <br />celebration of the 40~' anniversary of Earth Day and continue over future years to <br />include other city beautification projects. Donations are welcome as well as the <br />participation of interested volunteers. Contact Jackie Anderson at the Senior <br />Center or Officer Jim Carbone at the Police Department for more information or <br />to find out how to get involved. <br />• The fish fries at Springvale continue throughout Lent. To date, Friday sales are <br />averaging $1,500. <br />• The Senior Center garage sale held March 6 was very successful. This event <br />netted over $2,100 for the Senior Center. <br />• The Community Life Service Advisory meeting originally scheduled for March <br />18 has been moved to Thursday, April 8 at 7 p.m. in the Mayor's conference <br />room. <br />• On March 11, the IAFF ratified an agreement with the city which includes <br />approximately $410,000 in concessions. The contract included non-financial <br />agreements, including the removal of the successor clause, the addition of a drug <br />testing section identical to the Police contract, the establishment of a panel of five <br />arbitrators, a total agreement section and changes to the composition of the <br />Minimum Safe Staffing Committee. <br />2 <br />
