Council Minutes of 6/20/95
Mr. McKay said he recently had occasion to use the services of the city chipper truck and
wished to compliment the Service Department employees who work on the chipper truck
for their conscientious hard work. Also, some sections of the city have been experiencing
quite a problem with mosquitoes. The Service Department has been working on this
problem, especially in the Whitethorn area.
Mr. Miller, Chairperson of the Recreation, Public Parks and Buildings Committee: 1) The
committee met on Tuesday, June 20, and in attendance were Council Members Nashar,
Limpert and Miller, Safety Director Kasler, Recreation Commissioner Dolansky and
Finance Director Burns. The following agenda items were discussed:
a. Financial information from Springvale indicates that from October, 1994 through
April, 1995, income exceeded expenses by $131,974, with $49,000 of encumbered
expenses. These figures are slightly ahead of expectations. With regard to a question
concerning the number of current part-time employees working as starters as opposed to
the number when the course was first purchased, Mrs. Kasler will investigate and respond
at a later time.
b. Recreation Commissioner Dolansky brought the committee up-to-date on the number
of participants in the spring/summer registration and leagues. There are approximately
3,500 people participating the various activities--from a high of 1,024 in the learn-to-swim
program to 9 in the `guppy kindergarten" program.
c. Mrs. Saringer brought a resident's request to the committee for a weight training
program at the Recreation Center. The request will be reviewed by the Recreation
Department.
Mr. Nashar thanked Police Chief Sefcek for his outstanding service and wished him the
best in his retirement. He also expressed best wishes for success to incoming Chief Viola.
Mrs. Saringer asked that Mayor Boyle reconsider the time of Chief Viola's swearing in
ceremony. She would like it to be held at the Council meeting so that Council could
participate. Mayor Boyle said that historically the city has held swearing-in ceremonies in
the morning. He feels that our first obligation is to the Chief and the availability of his
family.
Mr. Miller asked to add the following item to his Recreation Committee report: 1) The
cost of painting the outdoor swimming pool will be $6,000 and repainting should not be
needed for 5 to 7 years. The previous painting procedure cost $3,000 every two years. It
is anticipated that the pool will be open by the Fourth of July weekend.
3
L
