Council Minutes of 6/2/98
,~ not have a definite date for paving the street. He has talked to several residents. The
~, reason the street will not be paved until school is out is because of a problem that NIr.
Smith mentioned with getting the school buses down the streets. It is true that the schools
did send out a letter, but it was rescinded. So that problem was taken care of. In order
not to disrupt the school children, it was decided not to pave until after school is out. As
far as the gas main and Mr. Smith's lawn, it is true that his home was out of service for 10
hours and his lawn does need to be repaired. He has assured Mr. Smith that whatever
damage was done to his lawn will be fixed after the street is paved. Mr. McKay,
Chairperson of the Streets & Drainage Committee, said that he had discussed this with
Mr. Bohlmann about three weeks ago and had been informed that the paving would not be
completed until after school was out. He believes the city is doing its best to satisfy the
residents. We are moving forward, and it is refreshing that residents are concerned about
when a job is going to be completed instead of will it be done. Mr. Nashar said he
believed a determining factor of waiting until school was out was that a school bus had
gone off the side of the road because of the construction. He is concerned about the
safety of the children and all residents. The city certainly wants to take every precaution
to get the job done completely and safely. Mr. Smith commented that he felt there was a
lack of communication from the city to the residents. He is concerned because the Mayor
was not aware of the problems. Mayor Musial said there are a myriad of activities going
on within the city. The directors would keep him informed on those problems that they
feel they could not address and which they feel need additional attention. He presumes in
this particular case Mr. Bohlmann felt that he was addressing the problem as best as he
could and it didn't require his attention. Mr. Bohlmann came forward to say that, if there
is anybody's fault for not informing the Mayor, it is his. He has had several phone calls on
this issue, but nothing of any great extent and he did not inform the Mayor. On another
issue, he wanted to make it clear that a school bus never went off the road in that area. A
bus was held up about 15 or 20 minutes, and the driver left because she could not get
through. It was simply a time delay--not an accident.
Sandy Prioletti, 6115 Christman Drive, also spoke at the May 6 Council meeting about
flooding in her backyard. She thanked the Mayor for coming out to her house to inspect
her property for backyard flooding. The Mayor informed her that he would ask the City
Engineer to come out and review the water condition in her backyard. The Mayor has
been very receptive to her problem. She recently attended a Bretton Ridge trustee
meeting and was surprised to learn that so many people had backyard and basement
flooding. She has volunteered to compile a list of residents with flooding problems and
will pass the list on to the Mayor and Council. Mrs. Prioletti said that she had also
received a note from Councilman Miller who stated he was going to bring up the problem
to the Streets & Drainage Committee.
Mr. Nashar commented that, after the May 6 Council meeting, he had spoken to the
Service Director about the flooding problem. Some of the problems were created when
Americast dug trenches to put in the cable and did not put back the grade correctly. This
problem has been addressed with Mr. Bohlmann, and he is going to take care of it.
»~
6
