Council Minutes of 5/19/98
Mayor Musial presented proclamations to Honorary Mayors Lisa Belluomini and Peter
.>,
-y.~, Stanley Sostakowski in recognition of their achievements and dedicated service tot e
Scouting program. Lisa and Peter were recognized and congratulated by the
administration, City Council members and all present.

Mrs. Saringer announced that All Scouts Weekend would be held on May 29, 30 and 31.
A parade will be held at 10 a.m. on May 30, and everyone is invited to attend the opening
ceremonies at the park immediately following the parade.
REPORTS
Mayor Musial: 1) On May 13, he and other mayors of neighboring cities attended a
luncheon with Cleveland Mayor White to hear a briefing on the proposed Hopkins Airport
expansion. The expansion which is projected to cost six hundred million dollars includes
three aspects: One, to increase the parallel runway separation to about 1,240 feet from
the current 400 feet. Two, improving airport safety by eliminating the runway's
connection with the east/west runway which will still be used. We will still have a noise
problem with that east/west runway. Three, to truly provide for international air service
by increasing the southwest runway to about 11,250 feet, which means that non-stop
service to Tokyo will be possible. With regards to noise abatement, it appears that the
reduction of noise will occur primarily by incorporating new technology. His concern is
the crash safety aspect. By the year 2015, it is expected that Hopkins will handle about
527,000 aircraft operations annually. This works out to about 1,400 per day, or about 1
per minute. Certainly by the year 2015, the area population will increase. The possibility
of a catastrophic accident would appear to also increase. In his opinion, it would appear
to be more feasible to construct an international airport some 40 miles away and have
high-speed commuter trains feeding from and into Cleveland, Akron, Columbus and
Toledo rather than expand Cleveland Hopkins to provide for international flights by the
current philosophy that they are following.
2) On May 15, the Senior Citizens Center held an appreciation luncheon honoring all the
volunteers. If one were to calculate the value of all the volunteer hours, it would total in
excess of $50,000. Senior Center administrator Marlene Telegdy is commended for her
continued interest and enthusiasm in working with our senior citizens.
3) Thursday, May 22, he will install the Chamber of Commerce officers and trustees in the
Heritage Room of Springvale at 12 o'clock. Members of Council, the Law Director and
the Finance Director are invited to attend.
4) The Cleveland Diocesan National Council of Catholic Women will convene the 38th bi-
annual conference on Friday, May 22, in North Olmsted at the Church of St. Clarence. He
will be presenting a proclamation at the luncheon recognizing their contributions.
Margaret McKay, wife of Councilperson Dean McKay, is chairing the event.
5) Memorial Day activities will take place on Monday, May 25. Flag raising ceremonies
will be held at 8 o'clock in front of Town Hall. A parade will start from City Hall at 9:45,
with the ceremony to be held about 10 o'clock at North Olmsted Park. At noon, a
dedication ceremony will be held at the Butternut Ridge Cemetery. Nine Civil War
veterans were buried without headstones, and through the City of North Olmsted, the
2
w,L f -.
