Council Minutes of 6/20/2000
building. (Stand pipes are extra fire hydrants installed in the building which are easy
access for the Fire Department.) The Assistant Chiefs letter stated that this would
•w-
exceed the intended fire protection capabilities and greatly facilitate any fire fighting
operation at this location. The committee recommended approval subject to all the
boards and commissions. Mr. Nashar moved to approve Horizon Activity Center
located at 4001 David Drive, subject to all recommendations of the committee and
boards and commissions. The motion was seconded by Mr. Gareau and unanimously
approved.
Mr. McKay, chairperson of the Finance Committee: 1) The committee met on
Wednesday, June 14. Present were committee members O'Grady, Limpert, McKay and
Miller; Council members Kasler, Nashar; Mayor Musial and Safety Director Bohlmann.
Agenda items were as follows:
• Resolution 2000-66 which authorizes the Service Director to advertise for bids for
8,000 tons of salt and authorizing the Mayor to contract for the same. The reason for
ordering salt at this time is the fact that it is lower in the summer time, approximately
$28 per ton. The committee recommended approval.
• The committee had planned to discuss Ordinance 98-19, but it is being held in
committee for further information.
LETTERS AND COMM~TNICATIONS
~""'` The Clerk read the following letter from a member of the Landmarks Commission:
~` "Dear Members of Council, I wish to address you this evening as a member of our city's
Landmarks Commission. Specifically, I wish to speak to the matter of the city
purchasing the land on Chestnut Ridge. While I present no opinion either for nor against
the purchase, I wish to remind Council that the land in question is the site upon which sits
the Historic Jediah French House. Council enacted the ordinance creating the Landmarks
Commission. Council provides advice and consent to the Mayor's appointments to the
commission. We ask Council to remember exactly what you have charged us with doing:
to designate and protect the historical artifacts, structures, culture and integrity of this
city. The French House is a precious remnant of our common past. Arguably, it is the
second oldest house in North Olmsted. It is an irreplaceable piece of history. So, as you
decide on your course of action tonight, remember that we are here to assist you in that
which you have by legislative action declared and charged to be of significant import to
the community. Consider all the implications of the city taking title to this house. Ask
for our assistance sooner rather than later. We stand ready to help, but can likely be of
more help the sooner we are involved. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Sincerely, George A. Corell"
6
