Council Minutes of 1/4/2000
between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m., there were 25 calls. With regard to the Fire Department,
there was an increase in emergency calls between 8 o'clock and midnight as compared to
the year 1998 going into 1999. In 1999, there were 3 emergency calls between midnight
and 8 o'clock in the morning; in 2000, there were 4 calls.
2) To clear up a challenge he made at the last Council meeting regarding donations to the
skatepark, he will donate up to $500 for each Council member who will donate a
minimum of $100 to $500. If all eight Council members donated $500, that would total
$4,000 instead of $4,500 as he had originally stated. He has contributed the extra $500 to
the skatepark fund. Mr. Limpert and Mr. O'Grady have each donated $100, and he will
write a check for another $200.
3) The Charter of North Olmsted requires that every five years, starting in 1965, the
Mayor is to appoint a commission of 9 qualified electors of the City of North Olmsted,
which electors hold no other office or appointment to the City of North Olmsted, as
members of the Charter Review Commission. These appointees must be approved by
Council. He has asked Council members to make recommendations to him of interested
electors who are qualified to serve on this commission. The commission, as formed and
approved by Council, shall review the City Charter and make recommendations to
Council of any alterations, revisions or amendments, if any, to our Charter as in its
judgment are desirable. Council will then take these recommendations under
consideration and determine which ones, if any, shall be submitted to the electorate. This
must be done before the end of August, 2000 for consideration at the November election.
The members appointed to the Charter Review Commission shall serve without
compensation, and the meetings of the Charter Review Commission are open to the
public.
4) On the census 2000, the U. S. Census Bureau 2000 has forwarded for review, update
and return to the Census Bureau, the local maps and special places addresses. This is
being coordinated by Mary Creadon. These documents were reviewed, updated and
returned to the Bureau this past December. Mary is currently awaiting the address listing
from the Census Bureau, which must be reviewed, updated and returned to the Census
Bureau by early January. We are responsible to include any and all new residences that
have come into the City of North Olmsted since May of 1999 and any new buildings that
will be started prior to April, 2000. The Census Bureau is slated to mail out the short and
long form questionnaires to all households in March, 2000 for completion and return to
the Census Bureau by April 15, 2000. Samples of the questionnaires are in the Mayor's
office for anyone's review. The Census Bureau has a website which the city has linked
to the Census 2000 page. We are still taking names and phone numbers for anyone
interested in volunteering to assist the City of North Olmsted to remind people to
complete the census questionnaires and return them in a timely manner. If anyone would
like to volunteer, contact the Mayor's office.
5) He has proposed an extension of the philosophy of Together We Can Make A
Difference to a collaborative effort between the Home Depot of North Olmsted, Wal-
Mart of North Olmsted, North Olmsted churches and North Olmsted youth groups to
provide snow removal services to qualifying home occupying residents. This
collaborative effort is being called Together Neighbors Can Make A Difference. We can
and should help our residents who may have financial and physical difficulties in helping
., themselves, and we should do it in a collective way-residents and businesses joining
x
3
