Council Minutes of 12/3/2001
• Ordinance 2001-146, which provides for permanent city employees who are called to
active military duty by the executive order of the President of the United States or an
act of Congress, shall not suffer loss in pay or benefits for a period not to exceed one
year. The committee was advised by Assistant Law Director Dubelko that the state is
~ also considering legislation. However, that should not deter our moving forward.
There could be possible changes in our legislation in the future. The committee
recommended approval.
• Mr. Bohlmann brought forth information in regard to the disposal of biosolids from
the Wastewater Treatment Plant. North Royalton now disposes of our waste, and we
need an extension of four months to our current contract at a cost of $26,000. To
contract this with BFI would cost $38,000. The committee recommended approval
and suspension of the rule requiring three readings.
Councilman Miller said he would like the record to reflect that during the time that Mr.
McKay's meeting was occurring, he and Mrs. Kasler and were attending the committee
meeting with regard to Springvale. He would like to emphasize the fact that Springvale is
not scheduled, under abest-case scenario, to open until Memorial Day. If the Canterbury
Road project is not scheduled to be completed until Labor Day, this may hamper the
ability of people to get to the golf course. Mr. McKay answered that Mr. Bohlmann has
assured him that the traffic would be maintained to the golf course. If need be, he will
make a temporary road to the course. Councilwoman Kasler said she had questions about
the increase in the cost of repair for Canterbury Road from under $600,000 to $850,000.
She will put her questions in writing.
AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION
Paul Obojski, 2904 Clague Road, an LTV employee spoke about the problems facing
LTV employees as the company is preparing to declare bankruptcy. He has been a
responsible, productive employee for 33 years and would like to seek employment with
the city.
Tom Hreha, 6418 Surrey Drive, is a candidate for the Ward III Council seat. Mr. Hreha
raised objections to a letter that Law Director Gareau setrt to residents of Ward III. The
Law Director responded to Mr. Hreha's comments and there was no further discussion.
Joseph Bouman, 23950 Lessner Road, expressed concern that the city is considering
spending $850,000 on South Canterbury Road. He also expressed concern that the golf
season would be lost if the course does not open until Memorial Day. Mrs. Copfer and
Mr. Jenkins noted that the leagues have been notified of the possible opening date and
have agreed to golf at Springvale.
