Council Minutes of 10/16/2001 <br />service of community members and the various boards, task force committees that were <br />>~ ~ formed since 1998, senior volunteers that are active at the North Olmsted Senior Cemer, <br />all of our veterans and the members of the ladies' auxiliary, the North Olmsted Fire <br />Departmen for their MDA fundraising efforts, North Olmsted Police Department and the <br />many community volunteer organizations throughout our community which make North <br />Olmsted afamily-orieirted community. The Fire Department has an annual car show for <br />MDA and again this yeaz, under the direction of firefighter Carl Schanz, raised a <br />considerable amoum of money. Also, the Fire Department has raised over $72,000 for <br />their counterparts in New York. The following individuals were asked to come forward <br />to receive a proclamation on behalf of their respective groups: Police Officer Huspaska; <br />Fire Chief Ed Bak; Jack Kiuchi and Bob Klabunde represening the Senior Center; Ron <br />Talton, chairperson of the Planning Commission; Brian Zergott, chairperson of the <br />Architectural Review Boazd; John Maloney, chairperson of the Board of Zoning Appeals, <br />Thomas O'Grady, representing the Fair Housing Boazd; Ray Puzzitiello, chairperson of <br />the Board of Building Code Appeals; Betty Lord, chairperson of the Landmarks <br />Commission; Tom Herbster, representing Community Council; John Thomay, <br />chairperson of the Civil Service Commission; Bob Whiting, representing VFW Post <br />7647. The honorees received the congratulations of the audience, Council members and <br />members of the administration. <br />2) Patrolwoman Angel Katy will be sworn in at 9 a.m. on October 29. <br />3) We are tightening up security at City Hall. The side doors can now only be opened <br />with a key and will be permanently locked. A protective plate will be installed over the <br />front door lock. He has directed the Service Director to look into the possibility of <br />installing a panic button at the receptionist's desk and at the Clerk of Council's station in <br />Council Chambers. With regards to general security difficulties we have in this country <br />now, our Police Department and our Fire Department are working in some of the major <br />azeas involving the mall and the muhi-story apartment buildings to make sure that we are <br />following up and that the individuals there will be protected. Regarding the atrthrax <br />threat, our Police and Fire Departments have coordinated their response efforts in the <br />event they are called to respond to a suspected event. If an envelope or container has <br />been opened contaminating the surrounding environment, it will be treated as a <br />HAZMAT event. If an envelope or container has not been opened, it will be handled by <br />the Police Department. In either case, the suspected substance will be transported to the <br />micro-biology lab at the State Department of Health in Columbus. The Safety Director <br />has spoken to the FBI as well as the State Departmem of Health encouraging them to <br />institute satellite labs capable of testing suspected substances. <br />4) Halloween will be held as usual on October 31~ . The Police Department will double <br />the available personnel that evening by bringing in auxiliaries to ride with zone car <br />officers. Patrol officers will concentrate in the neighborhoods, and weather permitting, <br />bike patrol officers will also be brought in. Parents should accompany their children and <br />check all candy received. <br />5) On election day, officers will be stationed at Butternut, Maple and Spruce elementary <br />schools during the school hours. Eeememary schools generally have very limited traffic <br />with control access. With the influx of voters to these schools, it is the desire of this <br />administration to offer a measure of safety and security we would want for our children. <br /> <br />2 <br />~.. <br />
